This is a huge loss for me and all of us. Sal was the guy who defined the Hulk's look in my formative years. Kirby and Sal.
I met Sal in the Nineties when he was in Chicago for a con. He and a group of Marvel artists came to see the Second City show I was doing at the time (and, aware that they were there that night, we improvisors tailored some of the improv portion of the show for them with a bunch of esoteric Marvel references. It was great to hear just those three tables laugh.) After the show, they all stayed and chatted with the cast for a while. The next day, several of us in the cast went to the con and there, Sal brought me back behind his table and we talked for a while, asking each other questions about our jobs. He then offered to draw me a Hulk on a loose piece of paper at his table, which I still have. He was truly a generous and friendly gentleman. Thank you, Sal!
