The first Hulk comic (#202) I ever got featured Sal's pencils. That issue got me hooked on both the the character and Sal's artwork. I would grow up on both (I was six years old when that book came out). So, to say he's my definitive Hulk artist is an understatement.

Beyond that, he was just an all-around fantastic storyteller.

Very sad news to this very big fan.

His comics, in addition to being masterclasses in storytelling, were just plain fun to look at. In many ways, Sal struck me as equal parts Marvel/Kirby style artist and Bigfoot cartoonist. He didn't really 'do' subtlety - though he sure knew how to build tension! He proved that even as the 80's moved more towards artists with a more grounded and rounded style, you really didn't need to have that as a major flavor if you knew how to draw with flair.

I met Sal and his wife while I was working a small comic show in Gettysburg back in '94 or '95. Super nice guy. He drew a Spider-Man head shot for me after the show and thanked me for being a fan. His run on Spectacular Spider-Man in the late 80's is one of my favorites. Sad news indeed.

So sad. I grew up on Sal's Hulk work. i think his work on
Thor alongside Walt Simonson was brilliant and his style so
complimentary to Walt's art when he took over the art
duties. R.I.P.

One of the high points of my 50+ years in comics was learning that the Hulk annual we did together was among Sal’s favorite jobs.

I don't know how old this photo is, but given Sal's age here, I'm guessing that it's within the past decade at least.

That's some mighty fine freehand drawing.

A few things:

Sal Buscema (THE AVENGERS and CAPTAIN AMERICA) Ross Andru (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN) and George Tuska (IRON MAN) were my introduction to comics, but it was the Avengers stories that Sal did with Joe Staton that really caught my eye.  Soon after that he seemed to be everywhere - THE DEFENDERS, MARVEL TEAM-UP and of course, THE INCREDIBLE HULK.  His level of production and his storytelling ability were impressive,

I think his work suffered a bit in the mid 70s because of some "less than exceptional" inkers and the sheer amount that Marvel asked him to do.  He, Don Heck and Jim Mooney seemed to be everywhere doing fill-in issues in addition to their regular assignments.

Inking Walt Simonson on THOR really seemed to unleash a new Sal Buscema, because his work on Thor after Simonson stopped drawing it and then his work on SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN seemed to invigorate him or unlock the new Sal Buscema.  Whatever it was, it was some of his best work.

50 years after first enjoying his stories they remain some of my favorite to re-visit.  The Captain America and Avengers issues with Roy Thomas and Steve Englehart are still some of my favorites, and in my mind he's the definitive Marvel artist for me.

I wonder... are Jim Steranko and Barry Windsor-Smith the last of the big-name 1960s Marvel artists still alive?

Interestingly enough, I pondered the exact same question 2 days ago and I came up with the exact same 2 answers.

Inking Walt Simonson on THOR really seemed to unleash a new Sal
Buscema, because his work on Thor after Simonson stopped drawing it…

******

He didn’t ink THOR before Walt stopped drawing. He only inked one issue
Walt drew and that was the all-splash issue which was a while after he took
up art duties.
