A few things:
Sal Buscema (THE AVENGERS and CAPTAIN AMERICA) Ross Andru (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN) and George Tuska (IRON MAN) were my introduction to comics, but it was the Avengers stories that Sal did with Joe Staton that really caught my eye. Soon after that he seemed to be everywhere - THE DEFENDERS, MARVEL TEAM-UP and of course, THE INCREDIBLE HULK. His level of production and his storytelling ability were impressive,
I think his work suffered a bit in the mid 70s because of some "less than exceptional" inkers and the sheer amount that Marvel asked him to do. He, Don Heck and Jim Mooney seemed to be everywhere doing fill-in issues in addition to their regular assignments.
Inking Walt Simonson on THOR really seemed to unleash a new Sal Buscema, because his work on Thor after Simonson stopped drawing it and then his work on SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN seemed to invigorate him or unlock the new Sal Buscema. Whatever it was, it was some of his best work.
50 years after first enjoying his stories they remain some of my favorite to re-visit. The Captain America and Avengers issues with Roy Thomas and Steve Englehart are still some of my favorites, and in my mind he's the definitive Marvel artist for me.
