On that same casino visit I sat myself in front of a machine recently vacated by an older woman. My first pull yielded a big payout. The woman, standing nearby, moaned. “I’ve been playing that machine for hours!”

I offered to share with her, but she declined.

I’ve seldomly played roulette. Never won or lost anything of real significance. While on vacation in France at a time when my wife and I were so poor we stayed in hostels and mostly just ate bread and cheese for most our meals, I once bet our ice cream money on a spin. I walked away with enough Euros to buy ice cream and a Pratchett paperback we found in an English bookstore.

A few years later I found myself up $200 at a casino in NY. I didn’t lose my starting amount, but I lost all my winnings and the way my body reacted, I think now I must’ve experienced a mini panic attack. Gambling - not really for me. It’s been years, but I don’t mind losing $50 when I have to charge my car at the Supercharger station outside the Salamanca Casino. That’s about my limit, though.

But a couple of decades back I was in New Orleans, and there was a casino across the street from my hotel. So, despite many misgivings, I decided to give it a try. I also decided to give myself a set amount of money to start, and play only that (plus whatever I won).

The late, lamented Big Easy Con!  I was fortunate enough to see you at all both of them!  I have a not-so fond memory from probably that same casino.  One of the days of the con I got the buffet there and ended up with one of the worst stomach aches of my life!  I "only" had two plates of food but much of it was prime rib, which is very dense and had a negative effect after it settled.  I very rarely get stomach aches but this one made me very miserable for an hour or so until it passed.

From what I've read about slot machines (modern ones at least) the outcome of a particular pull is determined at the exact fraction of a second at which the arm is pulled or button is pressed so unless that lady would have made her pull at the same microsecond, she wouldn't have gotten the same result.  You'd probably have a hard time convincing her of that though!
