Decades ago John Brunner wrote a novel dealing with the problem of overpopulation. It was called STAND ON ZANZIBAR (Hugo for best novel, 1969) and took its title from what was taught in schools back then—that the entire human population of the Earth could theoretically stand on the island of Zanzibar. Brunner explored several interwoven plot lines, looking at the different effects of the World’s growing population. He ended by noting that a large portion of the population was knee deep in the waters around Zanzibar.
