It’s a word that has been used to describe myself and my work a lot of times over the span of my career. And something I have come notice is that the frequency of use has increased over the time the internet has been growing among us.

Often I have said the internet is where context goes to die, and a very real reason for this is the kind of virtual immortality that dwells there. Time and again I see work—not just mine—from decades ago touted as “controversial” when there was no such application originally. (One such example is the adult Superman kissing the teenage Lana Lang—at her request—in GENERATIONS III. Something that was seen at the time as a poignant fairy tale moment—which was approved by DC editorial—but which in decades since has been stirred about by posters on the Web—many too young to have read the scene when published—until it has become stripped of context. Similarly, ten year old Sue Storm’s childhood crush on college student Reed Richards has been inverted and perverted by commentators who are oblivious to context.)

The longer something is “preserved” online, the more likely it is to fall under the scrutiny of individuals whose own moral compass seems much in need of realignment.

If we cannot acknowledge that young people, male and female, have
crushes on/fancy adults, we have serious issues.
Pretending it doesn’t happen is a mug’s game, and pretty dangerous to be
honest, because then you open the door for exploitation to happen as
people think of it as impossible.

How many males say something to the effect of ‘x kick started my puberty’
or something to that effect?
We think girls don’t experience that as well? Ever seen a teenagers wall full
of posters of adult male pop stars?

Fifteen year old Judy Garland sang a love song (“You Made Me Love You”) to a photograph of a much older Clark Gable, and nobody seemed too upset at the time.

But time is the issue. The perfectly innocent “Baby it’s Cold Outside” has been reinterpreted as a “date rape” song, and the ten year (possibly more) gap Stan Lee established between Reed and Sue has been turned into an adult male lusting after an underage girl. Nothing further from the truth.

As I said, these people are telling us much about themselves.

It’s a weird counterpoint to progressivism that those who see themselves as the most progressive are bizarrely conservative about sex and sexuality.

Context is massive and often lost behind emotion and lack of reason.

I was channel hopping the other day and landed on one of those 'shocking TV moments of the 80's' programmes.

Bill Wyman and Mandy Smith.

Now that was a moment that would be viewed a lot differently today...

It’s amazing to watch Fifties and Sixties Western TV series on Starz and find plot lines that would never make it today.

Pretty sure Bill Wyman and Mandy Smith was controversial at the time.
