That 90’s-era optimism was fairly common in the West, no doubt as a feeling of having ‘won’* the Cold War.
I saw an interview with Jordan Klepper where he said a root cause of MAGA energy was that it’s a hobby for retirees. Which really put a lot of this shit the West is going through into perspective, if not offering any actual consolation.
*’won’ = the list of problems that 20th century leaders deferred as part of that goal being all the reasons why civilizations are in the process of imploding right now.
