The pre-CRISIS notion was that the DC Universe had become too complicated, and was confusing to potential new readers. The reality, which I pointed out at the time, was that there was too much navel gazing. It seemed like no bit of continuity could be mentioned without unleashing a torrent of references that would certainly be confusing to anyone not steeped in the lore. The solution, I suggested, was to simply STOP THE NAVEL GAZING. Stop the constant archeology. But DC wanted an EVENT!
