Found elsewhere:

“John Byrne (Comic book writer/artist): The famous comic creator (known for his work on X-Men and Fantastic Four) was raised Catholic. When co-plotting X-Men, he notably discussed the religious background of the character Nightcrawler with writer Chris Claremont, debating whether the character should be Jewish or Catholic.”

Wait... was there ever ANY conversation that Kurt would be Jewish? Even with a billion retro origins, I have to doubt it.

Chris at one point decided he wanted Kurt to be Jewish. And very devout.

Roger Stern (the editor) and I pointed out that there were very few German Jews of what was then Kurt’s generation.

So Chris ultimately made him Catholic. And very devout.

Was that an influence on creating Kitty as Jewish?

No. Kitty took her look principally from the young Sigourney Weaver, but she also had elements of a former neighbor down the hall. That neighbor got engaged to a Jewish guy, who gave her a gold Star of David. She was not herself Jewish, but she wore that star all the time. The first time I drew Kitty in the book, she just looked wrong without it.

Was Mr. Claremont like this, JB: when he had a notion that tickled his fancy, it was going to happen, eventually, no matter what?

After I left, I noticed that Chris was doing all the “bits” that I had said No to—in order!

Not a big surprise. The Beast finding the team being held in Mesmero’s circus was something Dave had said No to!

My great grandfather walked away from the Catholic Church when he married an English Protestant. And, as most of you know, my father came back from Burma a Buddhist.

(That was fun when filling out forms for school.)
