Reddit is an echo-chamber to begin with, but any subreddit with a "circlejerk" name attached to it is specifically people who wish to mock or parody the kind of uncritical "echo-chamber" mentality that exists elsewhere on the platform.

It's entirely possible that many of those Redditors don't even actually believe what they are saying, but are intending to mimic the most idiotic comments on the main subreddits where most people post.

For what it's worth, as someone who's been on Reddit for 14ish years (and other social media for even longer), I emphatically prefer this forum because everyone acts like a sane adult here. Out there it's a shitshow.

Memes. Best not to even go further from there. Evan's right, there are many sections of Reddit that you do NOT want to travel.

A few months back I was reading a thread on Reddit and was legitimately taken aback by how friendly everyone was acting. It just seemed as if everyone wanted to have positive conversations about the topic. Then I looked at the date and realized it was a thread from 2015. It's incredible how toxic the pool has become even in that short period of time.

Are you saying that this thread is most likely fake?

I can't say with absolute certainty, JB, but "circlejerk" subreddits are meant to be trollish mockeries of the actual subreddits that they shadow. Or as the internet puts it, "Users post highly exaggerated, sarcastic content that mimics the most repetitive, fanatical, or predictable posts from the main community."

I think it's reasonable that many of the posters there are mocking people who earnestly like to vilify you, while there are probably some posters there who don't actually "get" the joke and are dogpiling.

Rule #2 of that subreddit is "don't take shitposts seriously" - the term "shitpost" being defined as, "low effort, absurd or ironic posts lacking context, often written with deliberate misspellings, poor grammar," etc.

In other words, best to ignore and let the sales volume of Elsewhen speak for itself. The internet in 2026 is a total cesspool.
