Elsewhen has helped me imagine what if John Byrne hadn’t left the X-Men
and it has brought so much exciting reading. The team that made X-Men so
special when John Byrne was first on it was very talented, but the biggest
ingredient for me was contributed by John Byrne.

But when I look at what happened after he left, I see how important Dave
Cockrum was to me as well. The stories were so much less coherent, but the
art was still so good. I wish that Dave had enjoyed the kind of wealth and
happiness that would match the impact his work had on me.

And, gosh-darn it, I look at the few Cockrum/Austin covers that showed what
their work looked like together and I can’t help seeing how easy it is to
imagine that team becoming as big as Byrne/Austin or Jim Lee or any other
art team you want to mention.

Terry Austin had some kind of affinity for the work being done on the X-Men
in that era and it’s beautiful to have what we got. It’s rude to wish there was
more, but it feels self-evident that more would have been really cool!
