Whenever I spend a few days marathoning my way through a favorite TV series I always find my dreams shifting into that “reality”. Sometimes in an interactive way, with the characters, but more often just existing within that world. Lately, I’ve been amusing myself with YouTube videos of AI generated retro futures and other such sci-fi stuff. And, not unexpectedly I guess, these, too, have begun impressing themselves on my dreams. I find myself moving thru scenes populated by those shiny plastic people common in AI. It makes the real world slightly disorienting when I wake up!

Those times I've awoken to find that I'd been subject to this kind of dream incorporation have felt at least momentarily quite decalibrating. It’s amazing how pliable our brains are.

I recently had a dream where I was in my old neighborhood and found that my car had been towed. I decided I did not like this scenario and forced myself awake. Outside of those dreams where I fall to my death (which thankfully are very rare), I don't recall ever having the free will to just nope out of a dream like that!

Oh yes, that happens, too! And I've also found myself sleeping in later on a weekend morning becuase I just didn't want to leave the dream that I was in.

On very rare occasions, I have been able to drift back into a dream shortly after awakening. At least, that's what it seems like. It's possible I may not have actually been awake to begin with and dreamed that part as well. Only about a month ago, I thought I was awake but saw someone or something in the room that I knew shouldn't be there and realized later that I hadn't truly awakened yet at that time.

AI affecting sleep hasn't happened for me as of yet, but it has organised some of my thoughts on drawing.
There was a point in time where AI image generation provided a white sheet that blobs of colour would appear on, then slowly these amorphous pillowy shapes would become something more compositionally arranged and from this probability cloud emerged the final regurgitated image mixture. Watching the image 'develop' made me look at my drawing process with a new perspective. First though, I've often read and been impressed by John talk about his 'projection' ability. Broadcasting what is in his head on to the page and effectively tracing it.
Something I could not do... Proof, if I needed it, that I was not cut out for comics.
I think he has stated that it may be a by-product of drawing in the permanency of a pen during the more formative section of his art journey. If I remember that correctly, it is a fantastic insight into the development journey of artists.
I find that I am more like that AI probability cloud. My brain writes the 'prompt' and tries to imagine the image. But so much of it remains undefined that I have to find the image as I go. (Where in this block of marble is the harp playing muse?)
I think this may be a commitment issue- :) There are so many ways to portray something, and in the context of comics, so many ways that these things have already been so wonderfully portrayed what new thing can you bring? Instead your memory (excuse the LLM language) 'scrapes' its influences and provides something derivative. <-This comment is aimed at me specifically but I am sure other's have made careers out of it.
What is also interesting is the division of my 'comic-book' art-brain and my 'storyboard' art-brain.
The former is as I described, the latter is almost like writing! The Victorian automatic writing kind. I go somewhere else, just like another thing John has said about those moments he zens out and when he returns it almost as if someone else has drawn the page. The art there just comes out as if I was writing prose.

You remember correctly, Darren. Before I received any formal art training, I knew nothing about doing preliminary drawings in pencil. I drew with pen, no underdrawing, and that meant ever line had to be the right line. So I developed the lifelong habit of working out my drawing in full detail in my head and “projecting” the image onto the page.

I’ve always hated work dreams, because sleep is supposed to be a time when we are free from the pursuit of wages, and I assure you, although I love my job the time I have to spend there each day is already quite enough, thanks. I enjoy playing video games in my spare time - if I dream about a game I’ve been playing, I interpret that as my mind telling me I need a break. Lately I’ve been watching a lot of Dimension 20, which has bled into my dreams. I don’t mind that so much.
There have been a handful of occasions in recent years where I’ve returned to the same dream (or approximate), which I’ve really enjoyed. This past summer while in France, I had random dreams about a former best friend from whom I’ve become estranged, which mostly just made me feel sad, but also I had a dream about a girl I went to school with from elementary until graduation, which was weird because we were never friends and I can’t even remember having a conversation with her. I still don’t know what the hell that was all about!
