Among the more obvious landmarks of this election, it is also the first-- and likely only --time that ALL of the votes that mattered to me panned out.  President, Michigan's marijuana prop, it's stem cell research prop, and Ann Arbor's proposition that selling off parks would require a vote by the citizens of the city.  A great, great day.

The 2000 election was pretty crazy, but after 911, Bush had the support of the country. He blew it when he went after Iraq, though, and continued to blow it from there. Bush is an extreme example, I think, though.

Yes, but it took a separate event for that support to take hold. Philippe was just mentioning elections themselves. Plus, in 2004, I remember tons of hateful sentiment over Bush's re-election.

But as I wrote, Vinny, Bush is an extreme example. It was believed that he stole the first election, and the country was strongly divided about Bush because of his actions starting with Iraq during the second election.

Here in Washington State we have a very close race for Governor: the incumbent Dem. Gregoire vs. the challenger Rep. Rossi.

Four years ago it was so close between these same two candidates that it had to go to re-count three times. The first time Rossi was ahead by 200+ votes, so close that there was a manditory machine recount. The second count gave Rossi only a 40 vote lead, so the Democrats exercised their rights to fund a hand recount, which gave Gregoire the lead by 10 votes. The state Supreme Court looked over some contested ballots, and allowed some, which gave Gregoire the office by 130 votes in December. At which point Rossi called foul, but he had no legal recourse to demand another recount.

Rossi bowed out chewing on sour grapes, and his recent campaign has been very mean-spirited. And even though he is substantially behind, he hasn't conceded yet. If he loses, by whatever margin, I expect the Rep. Party to demand a recount.

I'll let you know how it goes in December.

America has elected a figment of their imagination.  "There's gonna be a puppy in the White House to play with two little girls" -- oh, please, gag me with a spoon.  How is THAT going to put Americans back to work?  Obama can never live up to all the hopes and dreams that desperate Americans have assigned to him.  Rational Americans should have voted for the "political" experience to navigate and lead them through the troubled times ahead.  Instead they voted for smoke, mirrors and phantoms.

What a fantastic night!!

The concession speech by McCain was perfectly appropriate. Obama's speech was the best he has given. And he's given some amazing speeches! Obama immediately started moving towards his leadership riole with that speech.

In a time where it is difficult to find hope, I now have high hopes for the future of our country.

President Obama - it has a damn nice ring to it!

Voting for a cancer ridden 72 year old with an intellectually retarded "fluff piece" waiting in the wings while he was a banana peal away from handing her the Presidency was not voting for experience but a vote of insanity.

Paris Hilton has more going on upstairs than Palin.

the first problem with the article is the myth that we are in the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. No; we're not. Since the '79-'82 recession? No doubt. But folks, look at the overall numbers....seems like more lazy reporting.

You know, Bill you come off as a real asshole. And I say that as someone who's been an asshole a time or two in this thread.

Everyone else is celebrating the new President. Even people like Bruce, Scott and Vinny who didn't vote for him have been extremely gracious. And you come in here and not only slam Obama but manage to portray all of us who voted for him as complete morons. Please, go away. You're exactly the kind of person this country doesn't need right now.
