That's a great picture, Dan! I know I've felt that way before.

And Tom, that post was just, like, grody to the max.

A couple of observances about last night...

- Great speech by McCain.  He came off as a class act all the way.  That's the McCain I haven't seen in quite some time.

- Fantastic speech by President-Elect Obama.  It really moved me.  I actually felt a weight lifted off of my shoulders after 8 horrible years under Bush and his administration.  I've always been proud to be an American, but never more so than last night.

- The Presidential win was tinged with a lot of sadness this morning when I awoke to the news that Prop 8 here in California is more than likely going to pass.  Unlike William, I don't think our country if fucked up for passing it, rather I am incredibly angry at the millions that poured in from outside California trying to affect change in a state they don't even reside in.  Makes me sick, quite frankly.  I am sure that sooner rather than later we'll see this proposition overturned, but right now on a day where the ultimate racial barrier in America has been broken it breaks my heart that there are people who still actively campaign to refuse rights to a segment of our country.  I thought California, of all places, was better than that.  I was proved wrong this morning.

- Looking at the local election turnout, it became blatantly apparent that Republicans are a depressed lot.  In 2004 heavily conservative Orange County California** turned out 65% of the electorate.  In staggering contrast, only 35% voted yesterday.  This comes amid voter turnout nationwide at near record levels and here in Los Angeles county 82% of the electorate participated.

**To those not in the know, that's south of Los Angeles and encompasses Irvine and Anaheim, CA - home of Walt Disney World.

Not only that, Obama's 52% is the third-highest popular vote total by a non-incumbent in the past 60 years, bested only by Ike's 55.2 % in 1952 and George Bush's 53.4% in 1988.  In the past half-century it's been incumbents who've put up all the big popular vote landslides.  Bush II, Clinton, Reagan, Carter, Nixon, and JFK all were elected to their first terms by less than 51%.

A man with honor and integrity? A politican? Seriously?

That reminds me of a quote (I forget who said it):

"I wanted to vote for the best man possible for the job... but he never runs for office."

That's somewhat heartening to see after doing the numbers, Jason. How can any President ever feel that they have a clear mandate to enact sweeping change when they always win by such slim margins?

Looking at New York State, I was surprised to see that Staten Island actually went for McCain (albeit narrowly). The other 4 boroughs went Obama by a huge margin (88% for the Bronx - now _that_ I would call a landslide). This is why I'm still waiting to see the racial makeup of the voters. It would appear that virtually 100% of the Black vote went to Obama.

Hey Jodi, you live in Indiana, anywhere near Terre-Haute? I almost moved there in 2005 to work for ThyssenKrupp ( last year I almost moved to Urbana-Champaign, but that's Illinois).

I heard last night, and this was based on early returns mind you, that 95% of the African-American vote went Obama.

Thats not suprising to me -- I've always thought of Staten Island as the most "suburban" of the five bouroughs.  Traditionally its had a strong Republican presence, unlike say the Upper West Side . . . . .

Oh, I knew that, too, trust me...Staten Island is the Republican outpost of NYC. Just that in a climate where Red states are going Blue, I figured they'd do the same...

Which is exactly what happened here in NC with little known state rep Kay Hagan defeating Elizabeth Dole.
