Since the Dole-Hagan Senate race in N.C. has been mentioned....

As I see it, this race was a referendum on Elizabeth Dole, not an affirmation of Kay Hagan. And Dole flunked that test with flying colors.

Coming into 2008, Hagan was a little-known state senator with a lackluster record. Seriously, I could've named at least a dozen North Carolina Democrats with bigger names and more impressive resumes just off the top of my head.

But Dole was vulnerable in a lot of ways - not the least of which was the fact she ran perhaps the most inept campaign I've ever seen. Plus, she did a horrible job of constituent service  (like him or not, Jesse Helms always excelled in this area, which probably explained his longevity in the Senate.)

I'm a long-time Dole supporter, but even I have to admit she made her own bed here.

I kinda liked seeing Rick Santorum's face last night, talking about the impending losses. He's a Republican I never did like, and one of the guys that I think helped bring down the party.

No idea what Thom's reasons were, but this was one of the primary reasons why I voted for McCain and against Obama (I've posted this link before, but it's worthy of another look now that Obama is our President-Elect):

Obama may have been the "superior choice" to have a positive impact on this nation's mood and sentiment -- better to have shiny, happy, positive, and upbeat people standing in the unemployment lines, I suppose.

Marcio Ferreira (in part):

And let's not forget the general's...

Marcio, if all your generals look like her, I SURRENDER!

Kind of unfair, don't you think John?  In any event, Thom was touting the superior choice of Obama over McCain in an election where he preferred Clinton.

He was superior choice when compared to McCain -- at least the McCain who lost his mind and selected Palin -- but that doesn't mean I think Obama was a good choice.  I compared it earlier in the thread to being forced to choose between eating horse manure and arsenic -- clearly the arsenic is the worst choice, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to squawk about eating poo.

I do think a lot of voters got caught up in an "Obama Mystique," rather than looking at particular issues. But people said the same thing about Ronald Reagan back in 1980 and look how successful he was.

There definitely is something to be said about a president inspiring optimism and hope that can't be discounted. I mean, Richard Nixon actually had a lot of successes as president, but he'll always be remembered as a shady crook. Jimmy Carter had a brilliant mind and a good heart, but he also had an uncanny knack for inspiring gloom and depression.

In this economy, a dose of optimism isn't the worst thing in the world.

McCain really bungled the way he tried to explain how raising taxes on businesses during a near-depression is a disastrous idea during the debates. If he described the sitation the way the artcle above does, he may have actually won (well, that and ditching Palin...)

I don't think that would have tipped the scales in his favor, Vinny.  By that time, he had already bungled how he first dealt with the financial crisis the week before the first debate.  He also didn't come off well in that initial debate.  It's hard for me to pin one single instance where if he had zigged instead of zagged, we'd be talking about President-Elect McCain except where his reaction to the financial crisis is concerned and even then I think it would have been close.

Yeah, I guess not. I just remember yelling at the screen when he kept harping on Joe the Plumber. I know what he was going for, and I agree in theory, but his delivery was piss-poor. And delivery is Obama's realm at the moment.

I live in a small town called Yorktown, outside of Muncie Indiana,

Hey Jodi, I live in Richmond, IN!  I may have to come up and see your My Little Pony museum. ;)
