American slavery, sadly, is something found only in America. To remedy this came the African-American identity. It has very little to do with Kenya. They will not understand why Jesse Jackson is crying I'm afraid. There are other problems in communistic-socialist Kenya.
Vinny wrote: can see where Lars is going with this....His ancestors did not have to deal with segregation in the U.S., nor slavery even further back. ************
Exactly. Which leaves him with that shade of brown, so he can perform speeches as the President a sunny day without getting skin cancer, which is good.
Matt wrote: ..Would you really not call someone whose parents immigrated to the US from Africa in the 80s and raised a family African-American simply because they didn't live through the Civil Rights movement or have ancestors dating back to the US slave trade? You can't mean that differentiating is something you want to keep and that this is a problem tou you, how it will be implicated?
Marc wrote: think Lars and Vinny are dead-wrong. White men seeking to tell an African-American man that he is NOT African-American or NOT African-American in today's lingo... good god. **************
What if people in Kenya, and therefore also his father, happened to be white?
matt wrote: Then that person was wrong. It's just a racial subset every bit as much as Asian-American or Muslim-American is. ***************
A Muslim-American would be Malcom-X?

When I woke up yesterday morning, the news that Obama had won was the first thing I saw, so I decided everything's right with the world and I could go back to bed for a few more hours. Of course it also helped that I didn't have any lectures yesterday.
On another note: Firefox's spell check doesn't recognise Obama as a correctly spelled word.

Hmmm...under the Free Trade Agreement, if we get Jeff, what do we have to give back in exchange?

I kinda liked seeing Rick Santorum's face last night, talking about the impending losses. He's a Republican I never did like, and one of the guys that I think helped bring down the party.
***********
When he got voted out as one of my state senators I did the dance of joy. He was to me one of those Republicans who was more concerned how he was going to push his religious beliefs on everybody than doing anything worthwhile.

And Jeff? If you're coming here to get away from people who like Obama
you just might be barking up the wrong tree!
(By the way, I really appreciated your first post right after the results were
in.)

The African slave trade began well before the United States of America even existed.

I was cautiously optimistic about how things would be under Obama when he talked about reaching across the aisle and working together. That is, until he announced his chief of staff, the great divider.
