I'm against hate speech as well, but saying that I'm all for free speech.  The wall at NC State is known as the free speech wall.  For the last several years, there has been all kinds of vile written attacks agains Bush and others.  Yet, when someone writes something against Obama, the wall is painted over.  It sure looks like NC State is saying Obama is off limits.

$250 bucks for a wall display? Send me a catalogue from there, Scott. I
may have to place an order myself.

Here you go, Al.  I already have one for displaying the Classic Marvel Figurine Collection and since they are starting to get the DC collection in the US I need to get a new one for displaying DC.  It's the same one JB uses for his collection.

His "mistake" wasn't not knowing the US has 50 states

That would have still been wrong.  There aren't 50 states.

There are 46 states and 4 commonwealths!*

The ability to say so, yes.  I don't agree with it, but I believe that people should be able to say things as stupid as they want.

Yikes...I actually agree with Maher on something...

Hate speech like "kill the nigger" is like child pornography. It communicates acts that are beyond the pale, that has no place in society. Such things destroy freedom, and should not be protected by free speech.

It'll be interesting to see how he's satired. Some people make it easy for comedians. I don't think Obama is tough to slag off because he's black, he's tough because you have to put more effort in. You could go for the Messiah and do Jesus/angel jokes I suppose.

Saying something is in no way like child pornography.  One is words, the other is actual abuse of someone not able to take care of themselves.  Tell me then, where is the line between speech and hate speech?

Hate speech like "kill the nigger" is like child pornography.

I want to see even one single person defend you on this.   That is absolutely jaw droppingly outside any scope of reality.  Both are wrong but it's like comparing a paper cut to a beheading.

===================

I'm sure, very sure, that "kill the nigger" has been said in this country many times before the actual act. That's why those words are special.

Words only have the power that you give them.

Child pornography is the purposeful, horrific mental and physical abuse of an innocent child, which is infinitely more harmful than anything you can possibly say to someone.
