If you are protesting Viet Nam, Iraq invasion or say anything critical about our country, the republicans whip this out. I don't get the "Love it Or Love it." thought, I think the only way we get better is to look at ourselves with a critical eye. But being an art student you learn when you are critiqued it may hurt your feelings but it does make you better.
C'mon Jodi, villifying the otherside is a hallmark of all politics. You're right that the Bushies played the bullshit patriotism card too often and too irresponsibly but this is not new in politics. For example, in the 1960's many conservatives opposed the Civil Rights Act because of its impact on individual states rights. And they were accused of being racists by liberals. Quite simply, its easier to accuse than to debate. Bruce is defending his region and all the people who live there -- he's asking that the South and Southerns not to be judged by a minority of stupid people. Its no different than the reaction many of us had to Sarah Palin refering to North Carolina as a "Pro-American" State, rather than my home state of New Jersey. (Course, based on the election, ol' Sarah may have to recant that and throw NC into the Anit-American ledger).

I know what you are saying Bruce about low numbers in the groups. The thing that shocked me was Indiana was lower than Illinois and Ohio. We live about a half an hour away from Elwood which has no blacks and was home to the the Klans Grand Dragon for years.

most of the people in here appear to be very discriminative toward people from the south and people who don't like obama. you should learn how to tolerate intolerance. or practice what you speak. i am from the south. i am not republican, but i voted for the first time in my life. i voted for mccain. i don't want socialized healthcare. i don't want taxes increased. and i believe this world is in very bad shape with lots of evil people and sometimes war is needed to put bad people back in their place. if we don't assert ourselves in the world others may take advantage of that and kill some of us. it seemed to me that mccain has lots more military knowledge and would be a much better commander and cheif. i don't make fun of people from the north. i don't see why it would matter what part of the country you are from. it is a free country and difference of opinions is what america is all about.

I love the South. I lived in Gainesville, Florida for seven years, so I know of where I speak. The South doesn't have more racist folk or haters than the North, East, or West. Hate and racial intolerance are equal opportunity and don't give a rat's ass about geography. I've lived in the South, the Midwest (Minnesota), and the West (California) and I can say with authority that I've seen stunning examples of racial intolerance in all three areas. No one is worse or better than the other. To try and politicize this or pin racial insensitivity, hate, and intolerance on one region in order to demonize them and, in the process, puff up where you live is just wrong on so many levels.

Geoff I am sorry but the "Love it or Leave it" statement is crap.
When I wrote letters to the editors about invading Iraq was wrong, it wasn't the Bushies that wrote that on the newspapers forums, it was republicans. My and they had such lovely things to say. Now did they express what all republicans felt, no. But come on Geoff I'll agree we have some crazy PETA people in my party, wanting to use breast milk instead of cow's milk, that's just crazy talk.

I agree there are racists everywhere, but you can't change the fact that the south has a long history of being racist.

By wanting to expose groups like the KKK , sign me up. With your line of thinking you could also say the Police Force is a gang.
Just to be clear I do not think all southerns are racists, the majority of you all are great people. And South Carolina is one of my favorite states.

Is anyone denying that, Jodi? I'm also struck by this notion that the South has always been a hotbed of racism while the North is a bastion of civility and racial tolerance. I call bullshit on that. The North just does a better job of covering up their bias and racism.
Look, when we talk about racism we've got to remember that it's not only about blacks. The North has a loooooooooong history of racism toward Native Americans. The West has a looooooooong history of racism toward Hispanics and Asians. Yes, the South is the most recognized because of the Civil War and slavery, but that in no way makes the North, West, or East better because of it. Racism exists everywhere, in every city, small town, and farm across America. To point out one region as "the worst" is patently false.

Discrimative towards people from the South? Of course, they're a bunch of jerks... JUST KIDDING! Actually, from my experiences with the Board, there are a lot of perspectives from all over... I don't think that I've seen a lean towards slamming the South... don't take things personally. We tend to be a pretty tolerable lot and we have a great batch of Moderators.
I would have been a McCain supporter back in 2000 - but nowadays he seems to me me to be pretty watered down from the politician he used to be. The US is in a bad way, that's to be sure - and a lot of it stems from the Republican Rule of the last 8 years. And that's capitol hill Republicans who (I thought) were really out to serve themselves and not the people who voted for them.
McCain would definitely be a better Commander in Chief hands down, but that is only one aspect of the job. We also need someone who will take a serious look at domestic policy and make the changes necessary to take care of America first, other countries second.
Healthcare is out of control, and if "socializing' healthcare is the best way to get it out to everybody as a very reasonable rate.. then that's the way to go. This isn't a step towards communism as others would have you say... it's a step towards the government doing what it was invented for: to do what is best for its citizens. I just paid $2300 out of picket for a series of tests that my own provider didn't feel needed to be covered - and that's money I don't have. I have friends who only have COBRA, which costs just as much as a monthly mortgage... anything's got to be better than that.
The tax increase McCain has been campaigning on is actually a spin on increasing taxes on the wealthy back up to what they were a few years ago. 97% of the country wouldn't be affected by the increase. When he says he will raise taxes, it wouldn't be "on us." it would be "on them."

I agree with some of what you are saying Matt. One of my favorite verses in the bible is " let he who is without sin, cast the first stone" all over the globe you will find hateful feelings.

I don't agree with this though, not sure what you are talking about here.

Racism abounds country wide...sometimes it is organized into hate groups, sometimes it is simply an insidious ignorance and fear of other cultures.
There are no boundries it exists everywhere.
