THe problem is that the fights that Unions had in the 20th century are over. Now partnership is needed. Instead of protecting what they have -- with a chance to lose everything -- they should be working with the Big Three to keep jobs with american companies. The paradigm has changed.
I agree with that Geoff, but most unions are not like the big three.
The kid that is living with us and had graduated in the spring just found out he lost his job, because of the economic downturn. He was planning on moving out to San Fransico in Jan. Man I really feel for him, he is getting married in July and they just bought a car.

JT, and anyone else who's dealing with these hard times, my heart goes out to you.
*********
That goes for me, too. In the past month, one of my wife's best friends has been laid off, plus a cousin lost his job and had to take a stop-gap, lower-paying job. So, yes, many people are going through rough times and my heart goes out to them.

I find it rather amusing that one can even throw in a past Republican
President, but yet, the Bush haters will defend even a Republican
President to bash Bush.
***
You act as if people just arbitrarily bash Bush. That these people, most of whom are Democrats, can find positives about other Republican Presidents shows that they're not driven entirely by party bias. Bush was a wretched President. I find it unfathomable that anyone outside of the most hardcore right wingers could find his terms to be good.

I have to act like a republican some of the times! This would be a good discussion over a drink!

Much of the discussion here is a moot point.
It is irrelevant how better or worse today is compared to past history. -Think food. You eat in the now. No memory of past eating will put meat on your bones today.
It is irrelevant to complain how there shouldn't be a 700b bailout. It is.
It is irrelevant to complain how there shouldn't be a bailout for the auto industry. There will be a bailout. If not now, in January. That is a done deal.
What IS left to debate is how to make these things as effective as possible. Almost half a trillion dollars has been spent and little has changed in the philosophy guiding the financial industry. Executive compensation in businesses receiving the financial bailout money is still run amok. Banks aren't using the capitol they've been given.
We are demanding the Auto industry enter bankruptcy and go through a complete restructuring to receive 25 billion in aid. Meanwhile, receiving a piece of the 700 billion dollar pie was a 2 page application with no oversight and zero transparency. It makes no sense.
It makes no sense for Detroit executives to arrive in Washington using private jets. Nor does it make sense for financial institutions to hold the money they've been given, or to consider buying other banks with that capitol. Everyone should be called to task to put in writing what they will do with public assistance.

I am a Republican, who voted for Dubya (to my regret) in 2000, for Kerry in 2004 and Obama in 2008. But I am not from one of Governor Palin's Pro-American states. I am from the Great State of New Jersey.

That's what some women use instead of the usual restraining order, I do believe.
