GIBSON/HAMMER 2012

Really, really, dislike the candidate at the frontend of the ticket -- but I love that Bruce's Nickname was invoked.  Now I need to start giving everyone nicknames.

Need to think of one for Al . . . .

I'm sure that there'd be plenty of people around here who would be happy
to suggest ideas, Geoff.

We need something quirky, wonderfully sarcastic with a dose of crumudgeon, but good hearted.  And identifiably Canadian.  Hmm.  I need to ponder this!

Geoff,

Which is why I said you would "essentially" make a president or former president above the law.  I knew exactly what you mean as evidenced by your subsequent explanation.

I stand by what I said; you would set a president ABOVE the law.  Nixon, for example, shredded the constitution --- something he took a sworn oath to uphold --- and you wanted him let off the hook.

I think such thinking is what set the "pardon-precedent" every president since then, has, in the back of their mind relied upon --- and therefore has thus severely weakened what few restraints a president feels.  A perverse irony now exists that presidents can commit criminal acts and know that a future president (probably their own hand-picked Vice-President) will just pardon them to (let me wipe a tear here) "spare the country the trauma of a trial."

(P.S., Geoff, you often accuse me of being "extreme" --- let me say your Carter shooting someone in the face analogy was the definition of extreme... and stupid.)

I've decided Talley is "Baron Papanoida."

O'Brien is "Amabo"

Jodi is "Pinto" (with a nod of the hat to Tom Hulce)

Cook is "Otter" (with a nod of the hat to Tim Matheson)

In the case of Richard Nixon, I don't know that he quite got off the hook. He had to live the remaining 20 years of his life in virtual exile, shunned by the country he had once led and held up in public ridicule. I'm sure it was a pretty unhappy existence.

Just returning the favor you are always leveling at me.

Geoff,

Just returning the favor you are always leveling at me.

Originally, I responded differently, but I have to ask -- to what point?  I certainly never intended you to feel marginalized or to imply you were overly extreme but clearly you felt that -- so if you took it that way I am sorry, not my intent or interest to do so.  Going forward though I think it best if we just ignore one another.  No confusion, no offenses, no comments.
