Obama appointing Hillary as Sec. of State reminds me of the old adage from The Godfather about "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer." Personally, I suspect Obama wants a potential rival out of the Senate and out of the spotlight.

I'm actually surprised she is interested in the job. Is being Secretary of State really a better gig than a being a high-profile Senator? I'm not sure it is. But she's a good pick - she'll bring some needed experience to the job. I'm sure she's well-acquainted with many world leaders from her days as First Lady, so that will help.

Of course his picks will have some sort of Clinton connection - Clinton was the only Democratic president of the last 28 years - if Obama is going for people who know what they're doing, one hopes they'll have some experience, and to have that, they'll have to have served in some capacity with Bill Clinton.  In the end, Obama was elected, and HE is the change, not his cabinet.  Anything else you hear is a right wing talking point.

I think thats a great point.  I think for many (democrats and republicans alike) Bill Clinton is viewed as a particularly effective president. It was all the other bullshit around him -- some of which was fabricated but a great deal of which was self-inflicted -- that caused a "not that again" feeling among Barack believers (or Hillary haters).  I think it was Maureen Dowd who observed that Clinton was the first president who turned narcissim into a management style.  That said, a great many of the people he surrounded himself with were effective and certainly helped him be an effective President.

The other reason so many of these Clinton carryovers are around is because they are all still vital.  Don't forget -- Clinton was 46, younger than Obama, when he was elected in 1992.  And his support staff were about the same age.  So attrition has not worked it magic yet on the Democratic players.

Maybe for those that don't share your political beliefs this man is not due respect.
----

Jodi, for the record, I am neither a Republican nor a fan of Bush's bungling of, well, pretty much everything.

If I were meeting the Castro brothers, I could put aside the fact that their buddies did things like holding unarmed children at gunpoint long enough to prove myself capable of greeting them politely before listing my grievances.

When participating in Amnesty International letter-writing campaigns, I never wrote, "To the poor excuse of man calling himself President/Premier/Prime Minister: You're obviously pretty worthless as your country's leader if you can't win an election without all your opponents disappearing or you plunging the country into civil war. Do the right thing for once in your all-too long career, and stop imprisoning your opponents."

Addressing even people you loathe politely is always more effective, if only because it proves to everyone who's smarter and more mature.

I don't know everything about either job, but I'd imagine the international diplomacy aspect of her new job is much more high-profile worldwide, and the fact that you represent a country rather than a state.

Where in this forum have I ever given you the impression I am mature? LOL....seriously when?

To be honest I put Bush/Cheney in the same regard as Osama.  Both I would refuse to shake their hands, in fact I would spit on the ground if I was standing in front of them.

You don't get to pick your own nickname! That defeats the purpose!

How about "Tom Sawyer" for Dan? Y'know, based on the Rush song, not the Mark Twain novel

Good One Bruce, Tom Sawyer would be a good one, but lets shorten it to Sawyer.

Jason and Thom I don't want to leave you out , (*even though you may want to be)

Jason You would first get "Jason and the Argonauts" but it would more than likely morph to "Harryhausen"

Thom posts: I hate to interrupt the massive thread drift by going back to the topic at hand ...

Killzjoyz why you be hatin' the thread drift?

I know you all want to be serious about the topic, but am I the only one still feeling giddy from the Obama win?  I have been angry for so long, it is just nice to be hopeful again.

Bruce -

I know, that's why I made the comment about Kevin.  Although it might have been Aaron Smith that said that about me.  I can't remember now.

Tom Sawyer is fine !
