Not a solitary soul spoke about what Rev. Wright preached, be it in the broader context of a sermon or the singular theme that was the week's focus.  People found it so ordinary, so within their wheelhouse so to speak, that they didn't discuss it?  Not even to voice their affirmation?

---

No, I wasn't speaking in such absolutes, and if I gave that impression, I apologize. What I was saying was that in an 8,000 - 10,000 member urban church, I can see that a few statements that could be considered offensive could be lost among a broader, more acceptable message. Wright's sermon wasn't "The U.S. government created AIDS", it was "the government is capable of doing good and bad things and should be held accountable when it does so."

He's a little guilty for not actively and publicly rejecting the church, but he's a politician.  His job is to smile, be diplomatic, and pretend nothing's wrong.  He just kept on going to the church, not particularly wanting to create a big tiff.  Maybe it's a flaw, but I don't view it as a deal-breaker.

An interesting observation, and not one that I disagree with -- but I thought Obama was supposed to be so much better than "just another" politician?  This guy is being sold as the greatest thing since sliced bread, as the anti-politician, a beacon of hope and change, a paragon of virtue and honesty.  Ya know what, though?  He's really just a pretty standard issue politician, and not even an abnormally impressive one.  Taken for what he is, I could probably just shrug my shoulders and say, "He's better than Bush" but he doesn't come close to living up to his hype.

It's like walking into a car dealership and having the salesman telling me how wonderful this Mercedes is that he's selling me, when I know I'm standing there looking at a Jetta.  Now maybe it's a nice little Jetta, but it's clearly not a Mercedes.  I would be justifiably skeptical and resistant.

Obama is a Jetta; sell him to me as a Jetta, and maybe we have a deal.  Keep telling me that he's a Mercedes, and I'm going to remain skeptical and resistant.

Ah, I don't see him as so Jetta-ish as you, Thom (his humble background, in fact, is part of the attraction.) - but his Jetta looks like a mighty powerful machine compared to Hillary's Yugo.

He just wanted her the hell out of there.

I KID! I KID!

My father was conflicted in much the same way.  He never had a bad thing to say to me about other races - he never said anything about other races (gays is another story, sadly).  But last year I overheard him say "Martin Luther Coon".  I was shocked to find out how shocked I wasn't.  All I can say is at least he didn't raise me to be that way.

If Wright had built entire sermons around the government creating the
AIDS virus or the U.S. being terrorists (and I've watched the entire "God
Damn America" sermon and don't consider that specific sermon being an
example of that), I would agree with what you are saying.

We don't know if he normally built entire sermons around those topics.  We do know he selected a sermon with those topics to be recorded to DVD and sold in his church.

There's a poll showing Clinton with a slight lead in North Carolina. 44% to 42%

This is usually more accurate.

They've been very close in all their "predictions" so far.

By the way, a question for everyone:

Based on how the majority of the American people dislike how Bush has handled things, is he more damaging to McCain than Wright is to Obama?

He should be, but I honestly get the feeling that voters aren't that smart.

I'm not inclined to think voters are not smart -- but I do think that they can
be misled, Bush and McCain are very different in many of their views. I
think it becomes a question of how a candidate is defined. John Kerry, an
actual War Hero, allowed himself to be defined as weak and indecisive. Its
why I think Obama needs to define himself again in light of Wright.

Did anyone here watch Hillary Clinton's interview with Bill O'Reilly? I don't
like her, but, giving credit where credit is due, I think she did a pretty good
job.

Newsmax/Zogby Poll has Clinton & Obama tied in IN and Obama with a very healthy 16% lead in NC.

http://zogby.com/news/ReadNews.dbm?ID=1495

They've been remarkably accurate throughout...  Though I tend to look at the averages being given by Real Clear Politics.
