Some basic generalizations here, but:

Canada: Socialized country.
USA: Capitalistic country.

Average Canadian: Perceives that they have more freedom than the average
American.

Objectively, I'd say that's a fair assessment.

Yeah, but no one cares what the average Canadian thinks...

Very good observation, Joel!

Al - that's interesting!  I can't vouch for the truth of this - (thus me asking you in this fashion) but I've been made to understand that in Canada, you do not have freedom of speach and are imprisioned for "hate speach" - is this true?

I'm as liberal as they come in America, but that has always terrified me about Canada.

Not sure if it's true, though!

I think Canadians are a happy and decent lot - I've visited Canada twice  - Vancouever (sp?) BC and Windsor OT (sp?  ON?) and loved them both - had great food both times there.  I have very little to say bad about Canada - think the world of them.  But I've been cautioned (perhaps propaganda?) that there's a lot of PC mind control and lack of freedom there.

Ostensibly, we have the same freedom of speech than Americans do. But, if
you want to incite genocide against any identifiable group in Canada, we're
going to tuck you away for a bit, just to make sure your followers don't get
so riled up they carry it out.

That's about it. Don't try riling people up into killing other people, and you
can say anything you want. You can even go to Parliament Hill and burn the
flag.

We can even yell "Fire!" in a crowded movie theatre.

Hey, we can also visit any country we want.

I have never been too impressed with the Hate Speech laws in Canada but thankfully they don't seem to have been implemented too often.

Just the once, that I can recall.

Edited to add:

Just did a little further reading on our hate speech case (Holocaust denier,
Ernst Zundle). He was imprisoned for "knowingly publishing false news",
but that conviction was struck down by our Supreme Court because it
violated our freedom of expression laws.

(Zundel managed to get himself into trouble with immigration here and in
the US, and eventually got bounced back to his homeland: Germany.)

That's the only thing that's even come close to challenging our hate
speech laws, which are really on the books not so much for shutting
people up, but for allowing law enforcement to step in when some crazy
religious group decides they're going to go to a gay pride parade and
mete out God's punishment personally or some such.

Leading up to the NC primary earlier this week, Obama was running a series of commercials stating that he was going to create 6 million new jobs.  That sure does sound great, but like most of his promises (and not just him, but most politicians), there is very little detail on how this is going to happen.  Is he going to increase the amount of federal workers by 6 million?  Will he restart the draft and get to that figure that way?  And if he does, where is the money going to come from to pay these people?

Hm!

I may have to rethink Canada!  Thanks, Al, Neil!
