Why all the word(number?) parsing on the number of states?

Obama (gasp!)screwed up (Shock! Horror! Blasphemy!)because he was probably tired(Impossible!), no big deal. (Sacrilege!)

People do that all the time, a slip of the tongue when they could swear they said it correctly because it was going through their mind. It's like the (maybe) apocryphal story of the touring rock singer who shouts 'HELLO CLEVELAND!"...forgetting he's in Detroit that night!

"Uh, Steven, I think we're in Springfield..."

"Yeah, whatever...ARE YOU READY TO ROCK?!!"

I don't recall hearing any "shock horror blasphemy" responses at the 57 states blunder. Heck I suspect there was a typo on his teleprompter.  The response was more of a "LOL!" and silly altered flag pin to commemorate it.

Meanwhile "strategery" and "nucular" have passed for absolute proof that Bush is mentally retarded in some circles (Though Tony Blair has said Nucular a few times himself on camera!). There are people crying with laughter at photoshops of Bush holding "My pet Goat" upside down.

I think everybody knows 57 states is a gaffe. Duh.

But I find it kind of hard to swallow that Obama gaffes ought to be immediately forgotten and dismissed as lowbrow or even profane while Bush gaffes(even the really lame invented ones) are a minor industry that should just be gracefully accepted as part of the national sense of humor.

McCaine got picked on for his Iraq/Iran Gaffe. Hillary got picked on for her weird Bosnia sniper story and the muddled third hand tale of the pregnant woman who couldn't afford to be treated at the hospital and was turned away to die who it later turned out WAS treated at the hospital before she died.

Now it's Obama's turn.  What's the big deal? Where are all the jolly lol's?

Dan Quayle was hit a lot harder by the press for adding an "e" to potato.

There was nothing wrong with what she said.  Does Obama do well with the black demographic?

Yes.  In North Carolina he got 90% of the black vote.  A third of the voters were black.

Obama got a total of 874,659.  Clinton got 652,194.  Gravel got 12,404.

That's a total of 1,539,257 votes.  One third of those would be 513,086 black voters.  If Obama got 90% of the black vote that would be 461,777 black voters.  There are 1,026,171 non-black voters.  If Clinton got the other 10% of the black voters it would mean she got 51,309 votes from them.

That makes the break down:

Obama
874,659 total voters
461,777 black voters
412,882 non-black voters

Clinton
652,194 total voters
51,309 black voters
600,885 non-black voters

So 90% of the black voters supported Obama and 10% of the black voters supported Clinton.

It also means 40% of the non-black voters supported Obama and 59% supported Clinton.

A win is still a win, but looking at those numbers it shows that it's definitely about race for some people and that has to be taken into consideration when selecting the Democratic nominee.  It's better to appear a little less politically correct and win the White House than to appear more politically correct and lose it.

But when Clinton screws up about being under fire it's the end of the world?  That's a quite a double standard.

Scott, the two situations are apples and oranges.  There's no double standard.  In one instance Obama mispoke.  In the other Hilary misrepresented an event and tried to use it as an example of why she'd be better for the job than Obama.

Clinton was using that story as an example of how she has more experience than Obama, so contextually it is different, and not a double standard.  He wasn't using his mistatement to proffer his superiority as a candidate.

Looking at those numbers it's very clear that it's about race - for Clinton.

What is the population breakdown in the U.S. for black to non-black
voters? 20-80? 60-40? 50-50?
