I asked:

"How is the Superdelegate system better or worse than the Electoral
College system?"

and Mike O'B said:

"Well, it's worse in that it doesn't follow the will of the people - a super-
delegate can vote for whomever they like, whereas, at least in theory,
members of the Electoral College vote in accordance with the popular
votes in their state."

I'm glad you added "in theory" there, Mike...

Then Mike asked:

"How do you guys pick your candidates in Canada, Al?"

We line 'em up and throw bacon at them. First one to come up with a new
use for it gets in. Our current Prime Minister, for example, invented
Bacon Gum.

Actually, we have nominations within our parties (a really proactive citizen
would join all the parties, and participate in all the leadership races), and
party members (regular joes) vote on who will be the leader at a
leadership convention - often through three or four ballots, where folks
are eliminated and support is shifted around. Candidates present their
ideas, platforms and campaigns to party members at the Convention, and
the whole thing (officially) is taken care of in a matter of days.

Election campaigns are run on similarly concise timeframes. You vote
only for the candidate in your riding. The leader of the party who wins
the most seats becomes the Prime Minister (federally) or the Premier
(provincially).

And then we complain constantly about them for the next four or five
years...

Is it real bacon or the candian variety?

I invented bacon butter.  I would be Candian PM for life.  However, I would die shortly thereafter from a massive heart attack after eating my bacon sandwhich somthered in bacon butter, on bacon bread with bacon lettuce whilst drinking my bacon beer (all things I have invented).

Forget being PM -- You'd be appointed Governor General for your bacon
beer alone! Huzzah!

Al, it's basically the same parliamentary system(and convention/election schedules) as Great Britain, right?

"As my first act as Governor General I propose we replace the Maple Leaf with a picture of bacon on our flag, and I promise plentiful bacon on every skillet.  Moreover to address our dependence on oil I have invented an automobile that runs on residual bacon grease and empty Molson bottles"

Geoff:

Huzzah! Huzzah! Huzzah!

Bob:

Similar, but I'm not as familiar with the British system as I could be, and I
think there are some significant differences.

To the research-mobile!

I meant, no set timetable for elections, although they're generally held within 5 or 6 years?

No Parliament can last longer than five years. If there has been no
request made for a dissolution before a Parliament is five years old, the
Governor General will dissolve it on it's fifth anniversary.

It's never come to that in the history of the nation: The PM (or the House)
has always requested dissolution before the deadline. We've had
Parliaments that have lasted only a few months, and ones that have
lasted almost five years.*

*Excepting of course the 17th Parliament, which lasted 5 years, 10
months and 22 days to avoid an otherwise poorly-timed election during
the 1st World War.

Based on the California Supreme Court's ruling today (which I support 100%) I have a good idea what some republican strategists are planning -- nothing gets the christian base fired up like happy gay people!

Seems John McCain has articulated his goals for his presidency and his administration:  http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/05/15/mccain-troops- may-be-home-by-2013/

"Obama made a casual reply to a reporter, which he later claimed was a mispeak, calling her sweetie."

Maybe he meant to call her "sugar tits." I would totally vote for him if he did that.
