You want to negotiate up to a point, and not negotiate past a point, but that point isn't always very clear until you look back after the war is over.
There should always be an attempt to understand each other, though; even if it's just to help you kill the other person more efficiently. And some sort of diplomatic channel needs to always be kept open; there's a difference between leaving communication paths open, and appeasement. We always negotiated with the U.S.S.R., even during the worst of the cold war.
Once at work, a woman handed me a stack of papers, and I said "Thanks, Doll." It was purely out of habit, because that was what I was calling my girlfriend's little daughter at the time. Thankfully, nobody heard me. Conversely, I get called Darlin' or Sweetie all the time by the (usually older) ladies here, and nobody cares.

I'm sorry but I don't see the whole "hating America's freedoms" arguement. There are plenty of countries with as much or more freedoms that the US that OBL didn't attack. I think its more hating the US' Foreign Policy.

Good point. There can always be at least diplomaic back channels open where you don't negotiate directly but use a neutral third party.

Guess which statement gets you the highest approval rating in history?
I was on the fence re: Bush until the State of the Union 2002. Worst thing I ever saw on TV. 9/11 was done to us; 1/28 and the Axis of Evil? We did that shit to ourselves.

Do you not believe those three countries were our enemies or is it that you didn't see them as linked together?

Agreed, Kieth! One notes the irony of the criticism of Obama - he's a spineless wimp for wanting to talk to various world leaders, but a psychopath for wanting to go into Pakinstan... to get OBL of all things!
Boy, ya can't win!

You have a point on the axis part. Iraq and Iran were enemies not allies. North Korea sells missile technoogly to Iran but they'll sell it to anyone with the cash. it's not that much of a link.

I don't remember the "Axis of Evil" ever being an argument that the three were linked...just that those were our three main enemies that we were going to have to deal with. The US's "Rogues Gallery" if you will.

If "Axis" wasn't meant as an allusion to the WWII alliance of Nazi Germany,
Imperial Japan, and Fascist Italy, I'm curious as to the intended context.

Well, I thought "Axis" implied the link.
I've been known to make inncorrect assumptions, and Bush is known to be a grade-A idiot, so, factor both of those in.
