There is no way to accurately count a legitimate popular vote, given the disparity between caucus and primary states in terms of how many people vote. And the Florida and Michigan results cannot in any realistic way be argued to represent an accurate count of the will of the Democratic voters in those states. I find it incredible anyone would argue for considering votes cast in a state where one of the candidates was not on the ballot.
Mark Evanier made an excellent point a few days ago: Clinton may very well be correct that she would have a better chance in a general election against McCain if she won the nomination in a straight-up, unambiguous way. But that is not possible. There is no way Clinton could win the nomination now (aside from Obama being assassinated or caught in a major scandal) that would not result in "enormous ill will" being generated against her and the sense among a substantial amount of voters that she had cheated and wrested the nomination from the rightful nominee. There's just no scenario in which she can win "fair and square." And that would come back to haunt her in the fall.

Christopher, do you have a link for popular vote totals with various scenarios (ie, with or without MI and FL)? I'd be curious to look at it.

Good link, Christopher, but I think that while Clinton is expected to do well in PR, I doubt she'll do so well as to overcome the spread - especially if you don't count Michigan.
I could be wrong - but neither of us can see into the future. I still say Obama comes out ahead in the popular vote.
Unless... you work for dibold and know something I don't?

I thought she already did if you count the votes (not delegates) in Florida and Michigan? Next week will just put her further ahead in the popular vote.

Small irony: wasn't this the exact opposite of what she was crying MUCH earlier in the elective process, but substituting delegates and superdelegates?

I can completely understand not including Michigan, but why Florida? I live in Florida. Both Clinton and Obama were on the ballot so it's most definitely a fair representation of the popular vote in Florida.

The DNC rules committee could have cut the Michigan and Florida delegates by 50% instead of shutting them out of the process. But shutting them out was a good idea. Its not like Florida or Michigan have had close contests in any recent presidential elections . . . . .
This shit would never happen with the RNC.

This is a pretty funny "debate" between David Brooks and Gail Collins regarding the Democratic Nomination procedures. Good references to "Recount" as well.
