Here is an editorial from Frank Rich from Sunday's Times. Its very partisan (as one might expect) but the central question is inherently fair: are we ignoring the threat of terrorism? Have we returned to a pre-9/11 mindset?

Interesting piece there, Washington Geoff.
I can certainly say as a Canadian that we'd appreciate the help dealing with
the mess in Afghanistan. You know, where the real war on terrorism is
taking place...

Washington Geoff.
Don't lump me in with those people (in either party)!

I think the current size of the US Military is big part of the problem. Beyond the idiocy that is our war of choice in Iraq the military is stretched thin because of the cuts made by the Clinton Administration. I wasn't crazy about the cuts at the time but, to be fair, I think it was done because of a genuine feeling that the US was secure without an eye toward protecting us against the looming threat of Islamic Fundamentalist Terrorism. I also think there was a belief that technology would be able to take the place, instead of aid, the soldier on the ground. That decision, compounded by the legion of mistakes by the Bush administration* has resulted in the US military being stretched too thin. We are fortunate that our soldiers are as brave and talented as they are. They do not fail us, we fail them.
*I will agree that there are mistakes made by the administration but I will not agree that there was per se bad intent in mind when the decisions were made.

"Washington Geoff Geohosphat"
I told O'Brien that your hobo name should be New Georsey Geoff...
Edited for spelling. Of non-existent words...

Just as sadly true here in Canada, as well.

Thats a name I could endorse! or Jivin' Jersey Geoffrey, though maybe that'd be my pimp name.

I think sometimes, and its only a thought, that we should re-institute the draft. But if that were done there can be no loopholes, no protections for the children of the elite or connected. Children of the wealthy, not just children of the middle class and poor, would have to serve in combat. Might make us a little more cautious of the wars we enter into. Just a thought though, I go back and forth on it all the time.

If that caution doesn't already exist, nothing will make it happen. Every
soldier that falls is someone's child.

Agreed, but sadly I think for many the war doesn't affect them because they have no personal stake. One of the many reasons I admire McCain his kids serve.
