The thing that bothers me about McCain is, he said to be considered wealthy you had to make over 5 Million a year, I would say that is a little bit out of touch with the average American.

Not so fast. Don't confuse "wealthy" with "rich."  Two different things. Chris Rock put it best describing the difference (paraphrasing):

Shaquille O'Neil is rich.

The guy that writes Shaquille O'Neil's check? He's wealthy.

Joel: And really, what we're seeing here is Barak and the Dems playing old school politics. The real reason for McCain's nonanswer comes from owning multiple properties, some of which they do not reside in. These properties are bought and sold - especially in today's volatile market. It's not bc "the rich old guy doesn't know how many houses he has."

What is the meaningful difference you are trying to point out?  If McCain owns multiple properties worth 14million and doesn't know how many there are... he is NOT an old rich guy who doesn't know how many houses he has?

Buying and selling houses isn't like buying bulk candy.  He has to sign paperwork to buy them and sell them and has to think each deal is worth doing.  Even if they're all investments, he should know how many he has.  It's comical that he doesn't know.  It definitely felt like a wedge placed between him and me-- and erodes a lot of his maverick charm in my eyes.

Most of the property is owned by his wife. McCain wouldn't have to sign any paperwork or approve any deal.

And you know this how?

I would be curious to see a link to where you got that info. Reason I ask is Chuck and I file joint returns. I think the thing  that is upsetting about this, is how can a guy that has 7 homes and think anything below 5 million a year is not wealthy is out of touch with what is going on in most peoples lives. How can you tackle the problems of the working poor if you come from that background.  That to me is one of McCains biggest hurdles.

Jodi, John McCain doesn't COME from that background. Yes, he's living the good life now...but isn't that what we all strive for? And his wife does own most of the property...that's been well reported. Let's be real...McCain probably knew pretty close to what they had. But he's been busy running for president lately. He's understandably not up-to-speed on which properties have been sold/bought/etc. Rather than answer incorrectly, he gave the best answer in that situation.

And please don't tell me that John Kerry wouldn't have had to answer that question the exact same way.

No, Joel, the best answer in that position is:

It' doesn't matter how many houses I own, there are people out there in
America who can't even pay their mortgages and you're curious about MY
houses?

I think any politician worth his weight could've come up with that simple
response (even if he DID know what the real answer was).

Here's a link to John McCain's wealth.

Good point Gary. Actually, an even better response from him would have been your sig line.

I've got a couple of questions to toss out here.  First, why is it considered bad to be wealthy?

Second, is it the same or worse to not vote for someone because of their skin color, or to vote for someone because of their skin color?

Gary, I think that's really what bothered me most about this particular "issue."  It's a shocking thing to many people that anyone has too many homes to count, or however you want to slice it.  McCain should have seen that landmine and not stepped on it.

It makes me wonder if he had any idea how shocking that revelation was going to be.  I don't think he did and that's why it seemed revealing to me.

I've got a couple of questions to toss out here.  First, why is it considered bad to be wealthy?

There is nothing wrong with being wealthy, my husband and I aren't doing too bad and  we moved up the financial ladder by working our butts off. I think the thing about McCain is, he married into wealth as a result of an affair, while he was married. Not a great show of character to some, but to be honest I don't  want to marry the man, as was the case with Clinton, as long as I agreed with his policies I would be OK with him.  The wealthy thing goes back to what I said before , he seems clueless of his own wealth and people worry that a man so well off and out of touch with it , how will he relate to their problems.

Second, is it the same or worse to not vote for someone because of their skin color, or to vote for someone because of their skin color?

Jeff I am not sure if you are relating this question to my Klan picture, but what I was trying to get at is, someone said they were voting for "the lesser of two evils" and to me by voting opposite of a racist person, is using your vote to strike against that way of thinking. A better use of a vote in my opinion. It really had nothing to do with McCain. But to be honest, in both parties there are those that will not vote for Obama only because he is black.

There is a guy that's a democrat, I used to really like and considered a good friend, that is a town board member and he saw my Obama button on my purse and goes "I can't believe you are going to support him." I asked why did he say that, he responded, "Because he's black, for the first time in my life I am going to vote republican."  I responded "And you said that without any shame, that makes me really sad."

WHAT? Certainly he couldn't be a Democrat Jodi! He MUST have been a Republican!!
