I do think the "Obama bin Biden" etc. type jokes are pretty clearly racist, and religiously bigoted

Huh?  Really?  How would you get that?  How does using a term that is close to the name of a terrorist have to do with race or religion.  That's like saying something like Jiminey McDay is racist against white Christians.  In both cases they "sound" like a terrorist name.

I guess by that regard McCain and Abel is religiously bigoted too?

Though I do admit to being bigoted against terrorists.  Can't stand them.  Don't give a whit about their race or religion though.

Scott,

The same way I KNOW it is racial/religiously bigoted when radio talk-show hosts make a habit out of calling him Barack Hussein Obama and then react with wide-eyed, innocent shock when called on it.  "It's the man's name for goodness sake!" they exclaim with righteous indignation.  First off, in a civilized, and respectful society we refer to people how they wish to be referred to, and if you deliberately choose not to, there is a REASON, and don't try to pretend there is not.  When a conservative talk-show host refers to Barack Obama as Barack Hussein Obama, do you really think that isn't code for "HE'S A MUSLIM, HE'S A MUSLIM"?  Come ON!  I'm as partisan as the next guy, but I never carried piss around in a bucket for my liberal brethren when they pull shit, and you shouldn't either.

And just in case you think I'm wrong... I will tell you right now, that I never referred to Bill Clinton as William Clinton or Ronald Reagan as Ronald Wilson Reagan, or Jimmy Carter as James Carter... and I never call George W. Bush either George Bush or George Walker Bush since those are NOT ways in which he refers to himself.

Frankly, it's not cool to go around "joking" about terrorism in general.  But if you must, have the balls to admit that such a "joke" is meant to link the target of said joke to terrorism.

I knew it!  I bet you like French Fries and French Kissing too!

During the war, I had my students call me "Mr. Freedom."

Anyone see the McCain add congratulating Obama on his historic
nomination? Pretty nice.

Nice, but calculated.  Just like Hillary's speech was wonderful, but clearly in her self-interest.

Yeah, calculated. But in politics, I guess I'll take nice and calculated over the usual mean/cheap host/nasty and calculated. :-)

Eh.  Hillary could have been the total bitch or cold fish the Republicans and many Democrats make her out to be.  Instead, she delivered a rousing, heartwarming, funny, and insightful speech.  Sure, it was in her self interest.  Why wouldn't it be?  It's in her self interest not to fracture the party of which she's a part.  Makes sense to me and I don't hold her feet to the fire because of it.

Sure...but I also wouldn't give her too much praise on her for it either (not saying you are...but others have). Just as I wouldn't give McCain too much praise on for congratulating Obama.

I'm of the mind that very little of what people do in life is altruistic.  Most of it is motivated by self interest.  Varying degrees, to be sure, but for me to hold someone accountable because they were acting in what they thought was their best self interest would be hypocritical.

Matt,

My point was that all this is POLITICS... just because Hillary gave a seeming "from the heart" speech, does not mean her motives for doing so were any such thing... nor is it by any means a certainty that McCain means one word of what he said in that video.  Personally, I think he is trying to look like a great, decent, "above the fray" statesman-like kind of guy with that video.  I pride myself on being intelligent, dispassionate and non-delusional... whatever you choose to be is fine with me.

This makes no sense to me, but thanks for allowing me to be me, Marc.  Much appreciated!
