At least like Biden she brings no real electoral strength with her.  Thank goodness for small favors.

What do you mean?  It would guarantee a win in Alaska.  That's the biggest state in the country.  :P

This is going to confuse the people who are going to vote against Obama for being Black. Chances are, they also have a problem with women in positions of authority.

Joe,

No, it makes it easier.  Such racists and sexists will now be able to say, either way I get something in the mix I don't much like... so, I might as well choose.  Anyway, it's not analogous; with McCain you get a white man as President, with Obama, the top job goes to a black man.

The Palin pick sounds like a home run to me, at least on first blush.

She's a conservative, but not an idealogue who is going to be divisive. She'll undoubtedly appeal to many women, particularly working moms. And she's got a son who is in the Army, which makes for a compelling story.

Having said that, few people go to the polls to vote for vice president. But I think McCain got this one right.

Bruce,

Unfortunately, you are right.

Well, as a Republican, I think it's fortunate!

Seriously, though, I was afraid McCain would get pressured into picking a hard-liner like Romney. We need fewer idealogues on both sides and more people who are willing to reach out and work together.

For all the talk of McCain being "Bush's third term," I think that is the fundamental difference. I'll admit that Bush and his team have done a lousy job of consensus-building and reaching out to Democrats; that's been the fatal flaw of his administration, I believe.

But McCain has a long history of playing to the middle and compromising for the overall good. I think that will continue if he's elected president. The Palin pick seems to be another step in that direction.

I wonder how much of this decision was influenced by the 'John McCain just doesn't get it' lines in Obama's speech?

Palin's a relative newcomer who married her high-school sweetheart.  I bet she vetted VERY well.

Plus her fish-slapping dance is hysterical.

Hey, in this thread I predicted both VP picks!  CNN should hire me as a pundit.  Well, FOX news, more likely.

It was a good choice.  Biden was more of a 'do no harm' selection, while Palin will be a substantial asset to McCain.  I think that unless Obama's campaign changes course substantially, McCain has the election just about wrapped up.

One point I've heard repeated over the last couple decades:  The first woman president and the first black president will almost certainly be conservative.

There's a lot of truth in that statement.
