Dan: Now I think it makes McCain look desperate and a little insulting to women - not least Palin herself.
Scratching my head. Are you saying McCain selecting a woman VP is an insult to women? Or is there something specific about Palin?

Ok before she was Governor she was a mayor of a town of 9,000, in Alaska. I think she will be excellent on snow removal.:0)
As I said Scott I am building info on her, right now I am kind of like Fox news just throwing shit out there. :0).
Joel Tesch just cracked me up. Hee hee!
Me too I thought that was pretty funny.
She's once once in the Miss Alaska beauty pageant.
Yes being in a beauty pageant will get those Hillary women, (laughing my ass off.)

Keith - Everyone knows why he picked this VP. To the women he hopes to sway, the die-hard Hillary fans - I hope there are few that would switch teams on this issue, but clearly McCain hopes there will be.
And Palin knows she benefited from 'affirmative action.' Maybe she's a politician so isn't that bothered how she gets that power she craves, but it would be a pyrrhic victory for me if I was her. If you know what I mean.

It seems that every response from the Obama campaign and other democrats includes the phrase "a heartbeat away from the Presidency". She has more government experience than Obama and they want him to be the President not just a heartbeat from it.

No doubt, although even without considering her gender, I think she is a better candidate than the other names floated for the position. She has a large family with one son in the army, immensely popular in her state, she's noted for busting corruption in her own party, she's a HUNTER...
But it does seem that you are saying, yes, the mere act of McCain selecting a woman is an insult to women, since it was an attempt to pander to them. Are you willing to say McCain should only have considered men for the spot?

Now I am thinking she was just a token woman which kind of pisses me off.
So what makes a candidate a token on the republican side, and do you ever notice any token candidates for the democrats?
If I look at the Republican VP nominee's record and not gender, I think she's a good choice. A governor, which is arguably more hands on and a better prereq for the White House than being a cog in the legislative wheel: She's been good at reform, good at budgeting, followed through with campaign promises. Also not a total Conservative drone - she apparently supported and passed some same-sex legislation.
I would also prefer the more experienced person in the presidential role, not the VP one.

You guys are so boned if only because there are enough people in the US who will vote against Obama because he is black and enough women who will vote only for the first woman VP, policy be damned.

I'm just glad he didn't pick Lieberman or Huckabee....
Still haven't decided who to vote for. I think Obama got the nomination for the wrong reasons (he's black and not a Clinton being two of them) and is more style than substance but I like Joe Biden (I wanted a Clinton-Biden or Biden-Clinton ticket). McCain is almost as bad as Bush in some respects - electing McCain being like giving Bush a third term isn't quite accurate, but is close - but he's most definitely not going to serve a second term if elected (frankly, I don't think he'd finish a first term due to health reasons).

Look if you think for one mintue she was not picked because she was a woman, I have a bridge i want to sell you, she was a mayor of a city of 8500, 8500 people, before she was a governor of Alaska!!!!!! Alaska -- a state with a population of 670000. Hey as a democrat I am thrilled with his choice. Even though I still feel it was token choice. Now the Rush's of the world have no wind in their sails to slam Obama on lack of experience.
I graduated with a senior class of 775 I think I should have been a VP choice.
Palin agreed to follow an Alaska Supreme Court order and signed an implementation of same-sex benefits into law under protest, stating that legal options to avoid doing so, had run out.
Palin has said she supported the 1998 constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage.
But I will give her props on kids with weird names :Track, Bristol, Willow and Piper
