I think he said that the military makes men unfit for the presidency. A statement that those of us who have served (though I never served in any combat related capacity) find highly inaccurate and uninformed.  I have detailed what I feel is wrong with his assumptions.

I think it's funny that to support this, Jodi provided a speech excerpt from Dwight D. Eisenhower...who, before he was president, was a 5 star General in the Army.

Ah, you could have said that...I had it coming. :-)

I don't know Greg well enough to assess his character, but I can say
unequivocally that the statement "Anyone with a military background knows
that you are trained to kill the enemy without remorse, after having your
self-esteem shattered and remade into something else." is untrue.

I have a military background, and this is in no way reflective of my
experience.

Hey, I have a question about Eisenhower, and I didn't see an answer during a quick search.  Did he retire from the military before becoming president?

Edit:  Never mind, I found the answer.  He did.  While I think ex-military are perfectly good (and often appealing) candidates for president, it probably is a good thing for them to be EX-military.

Ray I call this a very valid objection to his statement.

It's been a while since I've had to look, but I believe that the UCMJ explicitly states that you cannot run for political office (State/Fed level) while still serving. Not sure if holding office would preclude someone from being called up on Guard/Reserve duty or off of retiree status.

Dang- I managed to offend a few former military guys here.  Sorry about that; I'm so F'in nervous about Hurricane Gustav coming straight at us that I'm saying more than I should.  Let me re-state it this way:  I don't believe former military men are unfit to be president, I feel that we as a nation (or at least me and people who feel the same way) should not look to that quality as an important criterion to be president.  I'd rather we as a nation begin to place greater emphasis on the altruistic and benevolent activities of a person's past instead of their military record.

Also, it was a poor choice of words to say "remorseless".  I guess what I meant is that a soldier shouldn't allow his personal feelings or emotions prevent his ability to kill the enemy when ordered to.
