The new hubba-baloo about Palin may be a smear campaign but if it has the scent of believability (and I think it does) people in general will buy it, much a some still think Obama is a Muslim.

(for those who don't know, there are whiffs in the air that Palin's latest child is in fact her grandchild to cover up ger 16 year old daughter's preganacy, and of course, Wootengate)

In this day and age, that would be pretty much impossible to cover up since it would be exposed with just an ounce of an attempt.  Especially so for someone constantly in the public eye.

I put that one up there with the Obama being the Anti-Christ rumor.

So, in other words, a huge chunk of the population will believe it.

Probably for the same reason that women, gays, lesbians, blacks, and other minority groups, and others are offended when people try to categorize them them using unfounded, untrue generalizations intended to marginalize them by depicting them as inferiors.

If you really are confused about why Mike's comments evoked the responses that they did, try reading Mike's statement to some of your Military friends, like the one who is staying at your place this weekend -- read it verbatim with no editorial "clarification" beyond what Mike posted -- and see if they find to be as full of sweetness and light as you do.   Better yet, just drop this into casual conversation with some of your friends who are in the Military -- and do it with a straight face -- and see how they react:

"Anyone with a military background knows that you are trained to kill the enemy without remorse, after having your self-esteem shattered and remade into something else."

You might be surprised at just how "sensitive" they really are about "comments" like that.

John (Bodin). I think you have a typo, You're referring to Mike's comments when it should be Greg's.

(Clarify which "John".)

Sorry to all -- my last post was directed to Mike O'Brien, and I was referring to the comments originally made by Greg Reeves.

Going into the DNC, Obama had an average lead in the polls of 1.4 points.  As of Friday his average lead was 3.9 points, a gain of 2.5 points in less than a week.   As of today, it's dropped to an average of 3.3 points.  I can only guess it's the announcement of Palin that caused the drop since Obama hasn't gotten any new negative press.  It will be interesting to see how the numbers go with the RNC this week.

It will stay marginal to the very end. We are a nation embittered and deeply, deeply divided. Divisions have long been set and the only sway will be on the margins, those who define themselves as independent and frankly, those who haven't paid much attention.

It will come down to who best sways this 10% or so of the electorate and who then  best motivates their base to come out and vote. It remains my hope -and belief that the contempt for George Bush and the last 8 yrs. will trump evangelical love for a gun toting soccer mom. -It will do that, easily. My only worry is if the contempt for George Bush enough to sway white voters to vote for a black president. That I'm not so sure. However, given the fact George Bush was force enough to bring down governments in England and Australia. I have every belief he can bring down Republican rule here at home. (The man has to be good for SOMETHING... search as we may...)

Good lord knows I can't wait for this to be over.

Our long national nightmare is 4 months from ending.

Don't worry Rich.  Obama will win this.  There is little doubt.

The polls are inaccurate.  They are not factoring in certain voting trends.  Don't worry about poll numbers.  If you do that, you'll think that Dewey beat Truman, or based on Exit Polls, that Gore and Kerry beat Bush.

People vote with their stomachs.  People know that America can be great again.  That we don't have to be hated around the world.  That we don't have to become a land of Beggars and Choosers.

Besides... if Obama can't beat this:

Then we deserve the fate we get.
