Thanks for the info.

I found quite interesting to note that Obama presented McCain with a
proposal that included two, not zero, but two freestyle town-hall
debates.

The final schedule of debates prepared by the Commission on
Presidential Debates -- which it is significant to note that the Obama
campaign has agreed to, and which the McCain camp has not yet signed
off on -- includes an open town-hall-style debate as the middle debate
of the three.

So I'm just not getting the whole "Obama wouldn't agree to the town hall"
thing. In fact, both Obama and McCain have been challenging each other
to town hall debates for months, and Obama has formally agreed to do
one. How have you missed that, Christopher?

Edited to remove an extraneous 'd' from 'an'.

I'd vote for Roslin. But maybe not for Tigh...

I never got much from the debates.  They seem too sound-bitey for me.  Plus I have never been truly undecided by the time debates roll around.  My all time favorite debater was Vice Admiral Paley (Perot's 1992 running mate) for pointing out that the verbal sparring going on that night between Quayle and Gore was emblematic of why Washington never seems to get anything done.

If we're voting for fictional characters I want Red Foreman and Arthur Fonzarelli.  Red would kick ass and take names, and Fonzie would fix the economy by hitting it like a jukebox.

Jodi, on that Web site you reference (Talkingpointsmemo.com), there's also a thread where they're bashing John McCain's military service, calling him a "murderer" and a "phony hero" and the like.

Yep. Trashing American troops. Mainstream America can really get behind that. Maybe they can burn a flag or two while they are at it.

Clearly, that despicable line of thinking doesn't represent Barack Obama, who really does seem like a man of character to me. But don't these radicals who claim to support Obama realize they are doing their man far more harm than good with this kind of garbage?

Maybe that's a rhetorical question. As a Republican, I cringe every time I read some of the venom that Ann Coulter and others like her spew. But honestly...I just don't get the thought process with some of these folks.

Michael:  I'd love a debate too but when was the last time in American politics we had a presidential debate?  A brawl?  Some real give and take action?  The ones I grew up with all seem tame and everyone pulls punches.  I want some action!

The debate I've enjoyed the most in recent history was the Leiberman/Cheney VP debate from four years ago.  That was civil, the guys were smart, they sat next to each other at a table with the moderator and both made good points.  It seemed like a discussion, not a succession of rehearsed, barely applicable speeches.  I think both the VP nominees that year were better than the two candidates at the top of the tickets.

(I know that saying something good about Cheney is sacrilege, but I like him more than Bush.)

********

Al, the common strategy for debates -- employed equally by both Democrats and Republicans -- is that you offer your opponent a debate schedule with a completely one-sided set of terms.

Then, when the other side says, "No way we're agreeing to that," you can come back and say, "Aha! You're ducking a debate!" And then the other side comes back with their lopsided list of demands and you play vicey-versey.

Both sides do this, so any time I hear a candidate say, "My opponent is ducking me," I take it with a big ol' grain of salt.

****

And now we know why Leiberman was so civil with Cheney!

Soo.... why come this? http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2008/09 /here-we-go.html

I mean - the obvious answer?  At least, you know, to a Democrat, is, a person should have some privacy, and he doesn't want the whole world snooping in his personal business....

Buuuutttt... I seem to recall hearing, over and over for the last eight years, variations on the old mantra "If you have nothing to hide, you shouldn't be afraid"

Which, of course, I disagree with.  I'm a fan of privacy.  But... this goes back to my point made last night - why is the media and bloggers hitting Pailin so hard?  Because they're so biased?  Or because it's fun to hoist someone on thier own petard?

Speaking of this sort of rank hypocracy... Pailin supporter and crooked Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska?  He's all about tapping phone lines!  What have you got to hide, America?  Uh... http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/09/fbi_taped_ over_100_stevens_con.php

Awkward....
