"I'm the first to concede we've made some really stupid blunders abroad, but I refuse to take responsibilty for the entire planet. Hell, I'm all for starting right here in my own county. Fix your own backyards first."

While I agree with some of that, the problem is the United States has been making decisions for the entire planet for the past four or five decades. Through the World Bank and International Monetary Fund the United States (and Europe) has been dictating how Third World governments have to run their economies. Countries who can't find lenders in the private markets must turn to the World Bank for loans. But to receive that money they must agree to strict free-market principles. Which is why improverished Egyptians depend on wheat from America. Why Indonesians can't afford to eat when the price of American soybeans goes up. Their governments removed trade protections from their own farmers, as per World Bank dictates. And there are other social policies the World Bank forces their debtors to follow, that have stunted their investments in education, health and infrastructure.

In other words, no, our government's hands are not clean in regards to the economic problems of the Third World.

Someone else posted this at another forum, but it's still a great read:  http://www.rollingstone.com/news/coverstory/make_believe_mav erick_the_real_john_mccain

Interesting read.  With video and a media buy, instead of being just an article in Rolling Stone, this might've had Swift Boat potential.

Oh gods, it reads like a dark satire. It would be funny if innocent Navymen didn't get killed.

Loved in the link where a defender of Palin said "You see lack of polish, we applaud it."

Are you kidding me. Isn't that why they liked Bush? Are people really that stupid? Whether you are Democrat or Republican you should worry about someone who can't answer the most basic questions about foreign policy.

Not sure if anyone has seen this or not, but John McCain is on his way to melt down:

This is the crap that I just don't understand. I love how they weren't expelled.

And they shouldn't have been, Jodi.

I detest what they did but I view it in the same way as flag burning, which I also detest.  What is Obama's stance on flag burning?

There's a big fucking difference between burning a flag and hanging an effigy of a black man from a tree. Both are detestable, but one carries with it too many other connotations. They should have absolutely been expelled.

Yeah, I see a difference, too. Hanging an effigy is a threat of physical violence. It basically says, "This could be you...."

In other words, this is criminal intimidation. Free speech doesn't allow someone to go up to another person and say, "I'm going to hurt you unless you do such-and-such."

Flag burning, on the other hand, is merely disgusting, cowardly and reprehensible - but not criminal. It doesn't imply a physical threat.
