Geoff,

"Assholes?" --- such harsh language.  Why isn't this just a "tragedy" that "happens to be criminal"?

A crucified, murdered young gay man not merit the same passion you express here for this racial hate crime that fortunately left no one dead?

Marc, I think you are vastly misjudging Geoff here. If he had merely called
the perpetrators of the hate crime against and murder of Matthew Shephard
"assholes" I think you would have felt justifiably slighted by that.

Just because Geoff's post in that thread was succinct does not mean that he
was not horrified by that crime. Indeed, I read his post there as a reminder
that not only was it a horrible tragedy, it was also a crime, with the
implication that the perpetrators of something so heinous deserve just
punishment.

Just my take, but, unless I'm misreading what you seem to think of Geoff I
don't believe you're giving him a fair shake here.

Marc, I'm shocked at your reaction to Geoff's post.  Such misdirected anger.  I appreciate your passion regarding the Matthew Shephard tragedy, but I really think you're over-reacting here.

I think we know enough about Geoff to say his moral compass points in the right direction. Marc, I agree with Al and Tom that you aren't giving him a fair shake.

a cardboard cutout became an effigy, the describe it as hung in effigy and then explain that it was hung by fishing line....no not the same

Yep.  It's not like they put a noose around the neck of an Obama doll.  A cardboard cutout hung up by a string....geez.  Talk about liberal media bias for Obama.

Yeah, dude, how do we know how he felt about the Sheppard thing?   Geoff's a good guy.

Marc - I see why you're angry, but why not focus that anger?  Instead of getting mad at guys like Geoff or complaining about how you wish Hillary would be the candidate, why not take a look at what we're up against?

The GOP VP Candidate belongs to a church that wants to "pray away gay".

In the face of that, do you really want to be directing that anger at guys like Geoff or Barack Obama?  Guys that are on your side?

Focus that anger, dude.  Aim it in the right direction.

**********

Hanging anything to do with a black man from a tree carries with it too many other connotations to be ignored. Regardless of the intent of the students it was stupid. Anyone in this country should know better than to do something like that. And to be fair, you don't know if that wasn't their intention.

And what does this have to do with the media? They reported a story. Nowhere in it were any political motives stated. They aren't allowed to report news anymore?

And to be fair, you don't know if that wasn't their intention.

And to be far, you don't know that it was.  Innocent until proven guilty.

Yes, report the news, not editorialize the news.  They reported it in a way that made it sound like something it wasn't.  Had it been students doing the exact same thing but with McCain it wouldn't have made headlines and been a minor story.  And it would have said they put up a McCain poster rather than hung an Obama effigy.

It's things like this that make me wonder why I'm a Democrat.

You can't say it's something it wasn't if you stand by your idea that we don't know thier intentions.

Besides...a black man hanging from a tree.  Hanging from something tied to his neck.  What else could it have been?

I think the dean summed it up correctly when he said:

"Regardless of the students' intent, the image of a black man hung from a tree is one of the most hurtful symbols of racism in American history," Lau said in the statement. "Displays such as this have no place on a campus that is dedicated to living out the teachings of Jesus."

And... you edited your post, making my reply seem non-sensical.
