Don - totally - I "know" you - I'm familiar with your posts - you and I usually see eye to eye; I'm just clarifying my stand - that there is a cultural connection in our brains that sees a black man hanging from a tree by his neck and they get that.
If the kids didn't know... like... what else could they have been thinking? You know. They thought - "Hey, we want to make a point about minority admission policy... and we'll use Barack Obama as a focal point. And... we've got this lifesize cardboard cut out. What should we do with it? Let's put it in the hall... no, people will deface it. Let's put it on the roof. No, people won't be able to read the sign. Oh! I know - let's hang it from a tree. We could tie the string at various points of the figure to prop it up just so, but I think it's more efficiant to just tie it around the neck of the figure."
Like - that's a lot of hoop-jumping to get to what the vast majority of the rest of the world sees as painfull memories of "strange fruit".
Besides - these are college students. They're supposed to be a little smarter than the average bear.
And - to clarify a point that Don did not make - it's silly to suggest the kids had to be wearing Klan outfits - because in real life, the attackers usually didn't...
I knew a girl that was complaining about MLK day...
Was her name John McCain?
