Well, at least there's a medical explanation for how vicious and bitter he
comes across.

Well, at least there's a medical explanation for how vicious and bitter he
comes across.

I was thinking about that this very morning -- I didn't watch the entire debate my oldest is sick so a lot of the evening was spent comforting her -- but what I saw (and it maybe just my read of him) was a man who is conflicted by what he is and what he has been portrayed as.  John McCain is his own man.  I think he's at heart a decent man, yet by clever manipulation by Obama's campaign, and ill conceived positioning by the McCain campaign, the "real" John McCain, the one we all loved in 2000, is being hidden or obscured.  I don't say that to excuse McCain or explain away some of the bitterness that came through -- but I do think its affected him.  Unfortunately, since some of this is self-inflicted it also raises questions about his judgment (which are already out there because of the Palin pick).

I heard Biden say on GMA this morning that he'd like to debate Palin again.  GMA said they had offered both candidates a platform but the McCain camp had refused thus far.

Losing will best serve McCain. He can return to the Senate and reclaim in his emeritus years the high level of dignified service that he achieved throughout his career, excepting this quite distateful, ill-conceived, and ill-run campaign. I hope McCain does that.

Ah but then... what will Obama do with the MESS he's winning?!

A very pertinent question, Michael. I sure wouldn't want to be him.

I heard Mike Murphy say -- if you don't like either Obama or McCain, elect them because making them clean up this mess is not something a friend would do!

It looks like the steady increase Obama was getting in the polls is starting to drop back down.  Since yesterday he's dropped from a 6 point lead to a 4.7 point lead.  There hasn't been time for the debate to impact the poll numbers yet so I'm curious to see what impact, if any, it will have.

Poll Date Sample Obama (D) McCain (R) Spread
RCP Average 10/01 - 10/07 -- 49.1 44.4 Obama +4.7
Rasmussen Tracking 10/05 - 10/07 3000 LV 51 45 Obama +6
Reuters/CSpan/Zogby Tracking 10/05 - 10/07 1220 LV 47 45 Obama +2
Hotline/FD Tracking 10/05 - 10/07 904 LV 45 44 Obama +1
GW/Battleground Tracking 10/02 - 10/07 800 LV 49 45 Obama +4
Gallup Tracking 10/04 - 10/06 2747 RV 51 42 Obama +9
NBC News/Wall St. Jrnl 10/04 - 10/05 658 RV 49 43 Obama +6
CBS News 10/03 - 10/05 616 LV 48 45 Obama +3
CNN 10/03 - 10/05 694 LV 53 45 Obama +8
Democracy Corps (D) 10/01 - 10/05 1000 LV 49 46 Obama +3

Christopher had said a statement I had made was wrong

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We were both wrong. The economy was not doing great when Bush was elkected in 2000 but it was not yet in a recession as I had thought.
