"Off the top of my head, things like:

Paranoia, distrust, divisiveness, unpopular president, controversial war,
corruption, economic crisis, loss of international credibility and respect,
media and politics that prey on and promote the ignorance of the general
populace, environmental pressures, energy pressures..."

Are we talking about antebellum America, the Vietnam War, Korea, the 1907 stock crash, the 1873 depression, or what, Al?

We're talking about the world outside your window, if you'd care to stop
being disingenuous and look at it.

Obviously, these factors have cropped up before, and will again. They do so
whenever the nation is at a low point.

"Do you think the Hubbard plan, which if I read it right would be a direct federal loan "repayable" to the federal government, would result in similar offers from banks or would the Fed have to set the accompanying rate to ensure a higher bank rate?  Would the interest payments to the goverment be tax deductible (wouldn't they have to be)"

The McCain campaign is vamping at the present time, Geoff.  I agree, the Hubbard proposal is the better of a questionable lot (though I'd trust Hubbard over others).  McCain's proposal isn't quite the Hubbard proposal, and bears far more resemblance to the Dodd and Frank offerings.  McCain goes farther even than those plans, however, by proposing the FHA buy outright, rather than backstopping the mortgages.  His principal write-down is devoid of the market ties offered by the Hubbard proposal (like no refinancing to maintain ratios), to this point any way.

On your last two questions, it isn''t clear under the McCain plan.  Under Hubbard and Mayers, the rate would have to be set (artificially) to entice widespread acceptance.  On the second, I don't see any other way, though the buy-out/sell provisions differ among almost all the plans...the only fixed being initial equity provisions and principal write-down, and some some sort of sell provision to protect the government.

Like I said, Senator McCain is vamping to get the details worked out.  Right now, his proposals are far more in line with the Dodd and Frank plans.

No, I get that his first question was nice - but then he accuses me of ducking the question and tears into those attempting to answer it while I was on my way to work.

A real class act that one.  I'm calling him on his stuff.

Jesus - your old snark was better - it was annoying but at least factually accurate.

He claims, and I quote, that I "ALWAYS" pass off "bullshit" as "hyperboyle".  Your example refers to one incident where I heard something on the radio and couldn't site the show or date thereof.

The bold is mine, and I agree completely.

Ah! So the nation is at a nadir, then!

Thanks for recognizing that, Michael.

And, a persecution complex, too, Mike?  My suggesting Al take up your slack is accusing you of ducking?  Take medicine, Mike.

Now, why don't you "call me" on "my stuff", and back up your hyperbole?

Now, Mike, how are you're quoting me?  here's what I asked:

"But then, that's how you ALWAYS react to being shown for empty generalizations, isn't, Mike?"

You didn't appreciate this question?
