At this point I'm actually almost hoping for an Obama win. I have a feeling that the next President, no matter who it is, will end up being considered the worst President ever (even more so than Bush) since it will most likely get much, much worse before things get better. That will fall onto the shoulder's of whichever candidate is in office.

Man, I've never hated anyone that much before. Not even my ex-wife.

I was glad to hear McCain's comments about Obama today. He made them despite making some of his supporters unhappy.

That is pretty shitty, Mike. I am very disappointed. I really do believe in his
heart he's better than that. But as I said, ultimately, it is his campaign.

I was going to post this in the "big scary" thread, but it probably belongs here instead.
Looking into my never-wrong crystal ball, I see the end of the
Republican Party. The working class Republicans will finally see that
their alliance with Big Business has always been a one-way street. The
fiscal conservatives will have had enough of the religious and
militaristic wackos who have been dominating the party. They'll split up, hoping to draw supporters who have been traditionally on the Democrat side. The Falwells and Robertsons will suddenly be BFF to the Black community. So it may also
mean the end of the Democratic Party, though much less disastrously.
The Federal Government is going to own not just banks, but auto makers, airlines, oil refiners, etc. There's going to be much less powerful opposition to "socialization" of the economy, but the U.S. is still going to sell these companies when the economy recovers. Whenever that may be.

Horace Austin:
"Actually, we're already there. President's Bush's $700 billion bailout plan ushered us in."

Actually, US is soooo far from a decent regulatory environment that I doubt that a Republican will make the necessary regulations that are required to ensure the best interest of the stakeholders of the financial markets.
About the $700 billion, read this article: "You Cannot Patch a Busted Dam With Water" http://www.financialsense.com/Market/shedlock/2008/1009.html

I too am sorry to see John McCain's self-destruction, or his destruction by his campaign staff. Was it yesterday he singled out Barney Frank and Chris Dodd as the real culprits behind the whole mess? How is that in any way presidential? And then promising to one constituent that those responsible would pay?
then last night on Colbert, David Gergen mentioned the whole "terrorist" and "kill him" bits from McCain rallies, and Rachel Maddow talked about it tonight. Apparently when MSNBC contacted the McCain campaign about this, the response was something like 'Senator Obama has been attacking us from day one and we can't control our crowds.' Huh?
Now I am a Demmycrat so take this as you want, but can it be anything other than desperation driving McCain now? I live in a solid red state - I joke that the Kansas Democratic party are all named Lynch - so I can't attest to the advertising elsewhere, but I have only seen one really negative ad from Obama, the one concerning the Keating business. And I have yet to see one positive ad from McCain. So apart from Obama knowing Reverend Wright, William Ayres and now some vague terrorist link, is there any reason to vote McCain? Because he's sure not telling me anything.
these are going to be 24 loooooooooooong days....

Jim - you are correct - see this story:

Key quote from it:
Nearly every TV ad McCain ran last week was negative, compared to just 34 percent of those by Obama, according to an analysis by the Wisconsin Advertising Project released on Wednesday

Ladies and Gentlemen... Betty White.
Oh, by the way - with this Palin story breaking this evening... how cool is it tonight to be a Democrat? To finally have an October Surprise work in your favor for a change?

"Oh, by the way - with this Palin story breaking this evening... how cool is it tonight to be a Democrat?"
To me, the most important part of the story isn't that she tried to abuse her position as governor to get her ex-brother-in-law fired, but that she did it so badly. Dozens, hundreds of phonecalls and nagging conversations to everybody under the sun.
Sheesh. All she had to do was call his boss in and say: "Full disclosure, my family has a lot of problems with a trooper under your command. I hope that doesn't get in the way of our working relationship. As for these budget requests, including your salary bump? I'm not sure if we can manage them. I'll set them aside and review them again next week, see if we have any new information that will help me make the right decision."
If you're the governor, and one conversation isn't enough to get a guy fired, the smartest thing to do is to shut up.

I don't think it will damage Palin much. Her supporters are not concerned whether she's qualified or ethically challenged.
