"During the campaigning for the primaries they came across as talking
down to people."
-----
That's really better described as "condescending" or "patronizing". "Elitist"
means that a person believes that members of a particular social group
(the wealthy, the educated, politicians, etc.) are inherently superior, and
deserve special treatment. I don't remember Obama ever insinuating such
a thing.
Sarah Palin's harping on "small-town values", by contrast, is the
dictionary definition of elitism, as was Giuliani's hypocritical
condemnation of Obama as too "cosmopolitan".
Personally, I can't recall ever hearing a politician that didn't come across
as just a little bit patronizing. It seems to be a natural by-product of the
belief that you should be in charge.

Scott - here's the trick - we Dems don't like to bring this up because it's a bad spot for Obama, but... point of fact, he's only been in the Senate for the last four years. If you base your evidence on his voting record in that time, of course it's going to look liberal. Because of course he was going to be voting against Bush during this period! Who didn't? Who still supports Bush? What's his approval rating been for the last year? Hovering in the high twenties? Of course he voted liberally during his time in the Senate - that's the direction the nation was in.
Look at his previous votes in Ill - and don't bring up the talking point about how he abstained - focus on the actual votes. Look at his writintgs, his ideas - what he says he's going to do.
Is he really that different from the other Democrats? I mean, I think he is in terms of the fact that he's smarter and more able to lead, but in terms of his voting record? I think he's pretty standard Democrat. Even conservative by my San Francisco tastes.

Today my daughter and I were headed to the movies and on the corner at the Galleria where the theatre is, there was a crowd of Obama supporters, including many elementary school age children, holding up signs to "Honk for Obama." I honked generously before and after the movie, as did many others. A wonderful thing - out with the old (and awful), in with the new. It's time.
Incidentally, McCain's time was in 2000, the Bushies swiftboated him but good. Now is not his time, it's over, Johnny.

I fully expect Palin to be groomed for 2012
Good god, let's hope not. I suspect this election will put to rest the era of the Fundie Republicans - I think of her as the death-rattle of that movement. (Besides - look at previous VP losers - Edwards? Went on to father illegitimate children. Liberman? Lost his mind. Kemp? Who knows where he went. Dan Quayle? Most successful of the bunch in that he was a signator of the PNAC. For what that got us..etc)
I suspect that, after losing to Obama in 08 and 12, the party will have to come to terms with what defines it and they will put aside the fundies and the faux populism and become real conservatives again. That would be a grand and happy day for America.

Tragically, ironically, with the same tactics he's now trying and failing to use against Obama.
This is one of the tragedies of McCain. Shakespeare should rise and write a play about this.
He seems like a nice enough guy - dig too deep and you find out that he's a bullying thug cheating prick, but on the surface? Nice enough guy. Comes across as pleasant in interviews. Seems like the kind of guy you'd want to have with you in your Masonic lodge. Go to dinner with from time to time. So it's kind of sad that he's being hoisted upon his own petard in this campaign. Poor dumb bastard...

Mike, I agree with those who say that Palin is a quick study. Imagine who she'll be and what she'll be in four years, with the machinery of the Republican Party preparing her for the campaign.
I don't think she's done yet.

Having re-read my previous post, I should have specified that I don't think she's done yet, assuming she and McCain lose the upcoming election.

She could run for the Senate in 2010.

I would have done like Thom and held my nose and voted third party (who
though! The candidates all suck! I can't bring myself to vote for
Nader after what he did, and the Green party is a bunch of fascist
nuts and Bob Barr and Alan Keyes are both right wing nuts, so... uh...
damn...)
***
I already grappled with that. They are all a bunch of kooks, but ultimately it doesn't matter -- none of them have a snowball's chance in hell of winning. I'm leaning towards Moore/Alexander. I kind of like the thought of being able to say, "I voted Socialist."

I have a suspicion that there won't be a Republican party by 2012. Palin will likely have another run at the Presidency though.

I honestly think Obama's going to win - the news headlines are doing more for his cause than any campaign commercial ever could. As for Palin, she's an uneducated buffoon who resonates with the angriest side of the party - mostly because those folks want to sleep with her, I suspect - and certainly doesn't have the political chops to last after the November defeat. She'll disappear as fast as she arrived, and no doubt will consider posing for Playboy for several million dollars. And that, as they say, will be that.
