Mike:
I quite agree --- though I would lump the Keating thing in with Ayers thing as a stupid kind of guilt by association. Palin's is guilt by commission, albeit guilty of doing a stupid petty thing. Thats a big difference. Guilt by association is unfair. I think its fair to ask about the relationship I have no problem with that. But once thats done unless there is some compelling evidence of bad conduct by the candidate I think its time to move on to sometthing else. Likewise now that the Troopergate stuff is done its time to move off of that. Her actions were shitty, as I said, but not terribly surprising. Ultimately they may speak more to her character than anything else.
I happen to think the Obama-Ayers gult by association thing is dumber than the Wright brouhaha. I've heard Hannity rant about it and specifically the 2001 Ayers quote to the New York Times in which he said he wouldn't take terrorism off the table (or something to that effect). Two things about that: (1) After the quote was published Ayers wrote to the Times (and I believe the letter was published) and said he was misquoted; (2) Hannity relying on the Times as it pertains to Ayers but calling it untruthful in every other way just seems slightly hipocritical and self-serving.*
A thought about Ayers -- but by no means a defense of his historic actions. Were Ayers and his colleagues accepting the challenge of Thomas Jefferson -- that revolution is necessary? Again not a defense -- just a thought. Ayers has, since the late 1970's, obeyed the law. He has I presume "seen the error of his ways." Assuming that is true -- why shouldn't Obama meet with him? Isn't that what a Christian is supposed to do? Forgive?
*I suspect that Hannity's response would be that Ayers would be treated fairly and quoted correctly by the Times because he serves their agenda. I call bullshit on that. I do think the Times has a strong liberal bias but I don't think they want to celebrate "domestic terrorists!"
