It [Seduction of the Innocent] was a product of it's time.
I agree to the extent it was a product of the time children actually read
comic books. Now those same criticisms are directed at video games,
television programs, films, the internet or music. Personal responsibility
--
the hallmark of true conservatism -- is often left at the door by social
conservatives when it applies to things they find distasteful, In this
instances instead of trusting the parents they have habit of looking to
government to cure the "social ills." So comic books -- as a kids
medium
today -- are too small a business to make a ripple. But the media I listed
above -- well where does Governor Palin stand on those issues?
Edited to ad: Further addressing Scott's point -- I think the idea that the
the criticism of media's impact on kids is a product only of McCarthyism
is being a poor student of both history and human nature.

Mike that just makes me sad. All of us who appreciate what John McCain
was -- whether you agreed with his politics or not -- should be sad.

I agree, Geoff - for god's sake - he used to be a decent and honorable man - someone needs to fire his whole campaign, grab him by the shoulders and shake him like a British Nanny. He just can't stop saying dumb things on this campaign. Even I feel sorry for him and I'm not voting for the guy.
Someone on his campaign - maybe that hot daughter of his - needs to slap him really hard a few times till he snaps out of it - look him in the eye and say - "Look pops. The smears aren't working. Stick to the facts lay out your case."
Poor bastard. I hate to say it, but I really feel sorry for McCain.

Its all Schmidt's fault. Fucker. Read Taibbi recently Mike? Specifically
regarding Rove? Interesting stuff.
At this point I hope when McCain loses (and I believe he will) he can return to
the Senate and redeem himself. I still believe he is a decent enough fellow -
- who simply fell prey to wanting to be President by any means possible and
in the process lost who he was and why he was, for a time, the post popular
politician in America. It is a real pity.
I really think that this election is now -- in so many ways -- a referendum
on Race in America. Lets see how we do. And lets hope Obama will govern
responsibly and not politically. Here's hoping.

I've been doing my best to stay up-to-date with this thread, but I know that
despite my best efforts I've missed many, many pages.
Have you all discussed what's happening with the GOP contesting several
thousands of votes and their legitimacy (i.e. folks that have lost their homes
and thus have no permanent address, and so on)?
I'm wondering, as a Canadian on the outside looking in, what Americans
tend to think of this tactic, if it will pose a serious problem to the outcome
of this election, and if it demonstrates that the US system of elections is
itself in need of massive reform?
