Long live the Grey Cup indeed, Bruce! All is forgiven, and consider this your
invite to enjoy Grey Cup sunday at my place this year. Tons of food, tons of
fun!
And Australian Rules Football is just insane - I love it.

Some interesting reading on the Times Op-Ed page today:
Maureen Dowd on Colin Powell's endorsement of Obama.
Tom Friedman on the energy policies the next president should consider.
And Olivia Judson on how obesity in pregnant women may affect the politics of their kids.

Not to contribute too much to thread drift - perhaps this comment belongs more on the Sports section of the JBF. But I don't understand why Canada would want an NFL team. They have their own indigenous football league that's a unique part of the culture - I'd embrace that.
(And I'd love to come to a Grey Cup party in Canada. Bet it's a lot of fun!)

I don't know that Canada wants it but I suspect the NFL thinks Toronto is a more profitible market than Buffalo.

Electoral college was a good idea ... smaller, poorer states have some leverage over the larger ones. But we live in an era where individual billionaires can throw down ten, twenty million on third-party ads (Swiftboat, Ayers) , run an entire cable news network as their own radical soapbox (Fox). The Electoral College actually lets those guys buy up the poorer states and swing Presidential elections. So any system that gives more power to ordinary individuals could be an improvement.

Not thread drift at all, Bruce! In fact, your last comment about the NFL
coming to Canada has completely won me over - hooray for the Electoral
College! If a great guy like you can get behind it, then so can I.
Now the Cup Party will start around noon on the 23rd, but feel free to
come up Saturday - there will be lots of stuff happening all weekend. Not
sure if Saturday will be my wife's big spread and Sunday my brother's
killer chilli or if it will be the other way around this year, so being here for
both days makes the most sense anyway...
Edited to add link to The Grey Cup, for anyone interested.

(The Bills can rot in hell for all eternity (Sorry William!) for how they blew it in '99 for not playing Flutie in the playoffs. Who the #@#% do you think got you there?!?!)
**********
Oh, Al. And we were getting along so well.
In all seriousness, I have to agree with you on Flutie. Never was given a fair shake anywhere he played.
Seriousness? Is that even a word?

I think American Idol is proof that Tocqueville was right about the
"tyranny of the majority" and that direct democracy is not a good idea.
==============================
So the answer is a "tyranny of the minority" ? Well, I suppose it is, if you think of yourself as one of the few who matter in the world.
