I always like the detail that he signed it "McLoving", with a 'g'.

Well, that's hardly "the world", but I'd feel better if those nation's leaders "liked" our president rather than despised him.
A logical, but idealistic statement.
Well, lets look at ancient history. Kennedy went to Europe ( I think, I was in diapers at the time ) and met with Kruschev. He was new to office, and inexperienced, and by his own words, timid. Weeks later the Berlin wall went up and we had the Cuban misslie crisis.
Perceived weakness, whether actual or not, can be just as dangerous as the real thing.

I am on fall break so I can't be on the computer much, but I had to tell a story. I was standing in line with a guy at the bank, he looked about 65 yrs old and he asked me about my Obama button, he said he was going to vote for Obama, he said he is a life long republican but he was ashamed by the direction the party has taken. So as a wake up call to the republicans he's voting democrat.
He said he is encouraging every republican to send a meesage to their party by voting democrat. That was nice to hear but I told him I hope Obama does a good enough job we can keep him.
Even Andy Griffith is supporting Obama

"My question still is; how is it not better just to let those individual
citizens
decide that on the basis of a strict count of their votes alone?"
-----
I've got an answer to this, Al. Mind you, I don't like the Electoral College,
and personally favor the idea of direct elections, but I think this is a
defensible argument.
Although the United States is a unified nation, it is also supposed to be an
affiliation of states, each with their own independent rights and
obligations. The Electoral College helps to preserve the notion that it is
the states that should decide our leadership.
If the Electoral College were abolished in favor of direct elections, this
would represent an erosion of the authority of the individual states, and
would be a major step toward state governments' irrelevance. Personally,
I don't see this as a major problem, but there are plenty of folks who take
states' rights seriously.

On ID's for voting... "But I think it's a good idea now - especially if there's some way to ... you know... have an option where poor people can get one, too - by whatever means. (ie - free or subsidized for those who fall on the Federal Poverty list or soemthing.)"
How about all those buses that were out gathering the homeless people to get them to register to vote? Couldn't they take the people to get free ID's before taking them to register?

Jeff,
Do you disagree with the homeless exercising their constitutional right to vote?

Not at all Marc. But if needing an ID to actually vote is the problem, why not take the homeless people to get one before taking them to register to vote?

Who here can honestly say that they are more loyal to their home state than to the USA?

Thom and Jodi have both posted this video - I wanted to post it again - hoping it doesn't get lost in the shuffle.
It's really awesome.

Oddly all that video did was make me want to vote for Andy Griffith.
