And I think Ayers owes society an apology, even though he is a private citizen and not a candidate for office. His crimes were designed for maximum public impact, so his apology should be equally public. His need to apologize has nothing to do with the Obama candidancy and everything to do with his obligation to make right what he did wrong.  

You're right Burce.  That isn't the majority of Obama supporters, no more than someone yelling something awful at a McCain or Palin is reflective of McCain supporters.  The part that really gets me is the quote from the *cough* artist.

Mike, no one is (or should be) disputing that the lynching of African-Americans is a tragic part of our nation's history. That's indisputable. But it doesn't make this anti-Palin display any less wrong.

As I said when the Obama effigy story broke a few weeks back, hanging an effigy isn't a political statement. It's an implied threat of physical violence -- "This could be you." There's no place for that in a civilized society. Personally, I think this "artist" should be brought up on criminal charges - as should the cretins responsible for the Obama effigy.

It's unfortunate, Geoff.  Because though many do not want to face the reality of it, there is a difference between blacks and whites in America.  Seeing someone hanging from a tree has a different historical context to blacks than to whites. 

I couldn't agree more, Mike, which is why I had a more vitriolic response to the Obama effigy some pages back.  But I do think the Palin effiegy is tasteless and a poor excercise of expression. Savy, my man?
