I don't know if this was posted before but it is interesting reading. Amazing how the editorial style has changed over the years. Read Lincoln's.
New York Times Presidential Endorsements since 1860

Even the senators that voted for it?
*************
The senators voted to give Bush the power to declare war if it became neccessary. They did not vote to go to war. Big difference. Most of them had no idea that was going to be his first course of action.
Bush suckered them as bad as most of the American people at the time.

Ya know, that is such crap. The Constitution gives Congress the authority to declare war. Representatives who you would expect to be on the opposing side of this issue, abdicated this authority to the President, because that's where the political winds were blowing at the time at the time. They didn't want to risk running for re-election having voted against this, because the majority of Americans supported it. They knew what the President was going to do...hell, many Democrats agued for it! When it wasn't popular anymore, all of the sudden, they were misled. The mad genius George Bush tricked them. I believe the war has been a disaster, but can we just be a little honest about how it happened?

Michael. Good point. To say that Bush is responsible alone, is the same saying Hitler was the only responsible for the holocaust, everybody who did not marked their position and opposed the Iraq invasion from day one (like Obama) is somewhat responsible. What changes is the quantitative and qualitative aspects of that responsibility.

Bullshit. You can make all the claims you want that they voted for political reasons. The fact is they were misled. You really believe that they knew what Bush was going to do? You have some proof of this?
I'm not saying for a second that they aren't responsible for this also. But I don't believe for a second that they knew he was going to declare war as soon as he was given the power. You should be able to trust the President to do the right thing. They did and he didn't.
And who said anything about Democrats? Just as many Republicans were misled. I don't give a shit who argued for it. I wasn't just defending the Dems in my statement. I truly believe all of Congress was misled into believing that Iraq was an imminent threat. I also believe that Bush and Cheney went out of their way to link Iraq to 9/11 just so they could go in. Why? I have no idea. But when people in the administration are coming out and saying they were duped, I give them the benefit of the doubt.
Bush has earned no such benefit from me.

Everyone wanted a war, based on lies cooked up by the White House and Pentagon.

Never said I was glad about this, didn't post anything at all to imply that, but thank you so much for mind-reading and exposing what must obviously be my true feelings. Very big of you indeed.
Not.
Gotta say it's pretty inane of you to imply that I'm "glad" about the assassination attempt "just to prove you wrong" -- I posted this to underscore the fact that concerns about attempts on Obama's life from lunatic fringe nutjobs isn't necessarily an unfounded fear. Character assassination is the way of the modern media, but it's not necessarily the chosen method employed by radical fringe groups. THAT was my point.
Now, please excuse me -- I've gotta go spit out those vile, distateful words you so loving shoved into my mouth.
EDITED TO ADD: Great example of how to carry out a proper character assassination -- kudos on turning this into a teaching experience for all of us.
