Yes, ok, Haliburton is t3h 3v1l, but not all companies are Haliburton.
What about a company like, say, IBM? Or even worse, GM? How do you
think they will handle the extra hit, especially now?
Well, they don't have money trees. Every penny that any corporation pays in taxes comes from a single source. Our wallets. If taxes go up they just raise the price on goods and services to cover the increase in their costs. For GM or IBM to survive they'll have to raise their prices or cut their costs through layoffs.

Ed, you paint such a deceptively pretty picture, white washing a lot of detail. I love the part where you say, "The decline in economy was started before Bush was in office and we've had a Democratic congress for half the time since."
Ignoring the questionable line "decline in economy was started before Bush"... I delight in how you gloss over the 4 -count 'em- 4 years... 1... 2... 3... 4 of em, years the Republicans controlled all 3 branches of government.
Certainly a life-time to right any number of wrongs held over from a Clinton Administration. If you have a gripe about Clinton policy, you should fault you party for doing nothing about those evils.... EEEEEVILLLLLs... when they had every opportunity to do so.
Really, don't make your leaders sound so impotent, so forced to suffer the indignities of the Clinton years. If you want to run against him, you should have done so 12 years ago.

As for General Motors and IBM....
I believe the idea is one taxes Profit????? Correct me if I'm wrong. I was an art major in college.
In regards to tax rates, if one has no profit, it is a moot point. It would seem IBM and GM would hope to be in a position to NEED to pay taxes.
Frankly, I would love to move into that higher paying tax bracket.....
In fact, I would bet EVERYONE on this board wishes they had the troubles of paying higher taxes under Obama's plan.
Even Joe, the plumber.

And back to Ed for a moment....
Ed, what ever do you mean about the 'enemy' in Iraq. Who exactly are you speaking of?

And another point before I go off and mix paint....
I love the doomsday chorus that rises from the balcony over the new tax rates. "There won't be any incentive to create jobs! The burden will be so overwhelming, the entire economy will collapse!" Ummm, people we are simply returning the tax rates to previous numbers. It wasn't the end of the world then, it won't be the end of the world now. Rich people will have the same incentive to do as they love to do: make money.
Which is in part, a huge part of the problem. The idea being fostered is that wealth should be kept in the hands of the wealthy, the corporations. They will do all those altruistic things rich people and corporations do: create jobs.
Ha.
When corporations have capital, they buy other corporations and downsize. When banks have capital, they buy each other. -At least, that's what these mega-giants entertained themselves with over the past few years.
And the wealthy? We've had wealth re-distribution for the last 20+ years. Upwards. If you want to cast blame over the present economic collapse, the fault lies primarily on the shoulders of those "Far Left Wing"corporate executives who -in between casting votes for Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid were busy bundling mortgages as product and trading them in a pyramid scheme for profit. Blame those "Far Left Wing" corporate executives who -in between casting votges for Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid- were busy giving themselves massive bonuses and golden parachutes while their derivatives pyramid schemes collapsed around them.
Only a 'far left wing', un-american jerk would ship jobs overseas...
Evil, left wing.
EEEEvilllllll......

Well... my marriage counts as far as I'M concerned, but the government doesn't seem to think so.
But since you brought it up... I'd like to take a moment to "plug" that "other thread." (Pardon the pun, although, on "that other thread," there's puns a'plenty) What a strange little thread drift has happened over there in the last hundred pages or so. Sure we still talk about All Things Gay, but gay has changed its meaning. In that other thread, gay has come to mean "happy and light."
Pop on over -- have a drink -- read a couple of pages and jump in. In the spirit of inclusion, we'll even welcome members of the GOP (but still, no republicans). <-- I'm kidding, we're a politically-blind friendly thread (unless bitching about republicans) <-- kidding again. lighten up.
Thank you for your time -- now back to the "Elections" thread. (What's gonna happen after next Tuesday? You gotta have SOME thread to come to -- come to ours! Okay, THAT was the last plug.)

Wonderful thread it is. Tom's a great host. But it is BYOB. Tom accepts me eventhough I am a Republican (though for how much longer I can't say).

And that's precisely why I like you, Geoff. How often do you meet an uncertain republican?

More and more I suspect -- to paraphrase Ronald Reagan to quote Mr. Reagan: I have not left my party; my party has left me.

Tax increases:
In the past 15 years the tax over the GDP grew from 23% to 34% in Brazil. That didn't stopped business. The overall conditions of the population improved, but it does not change the fact that tax sucks.

From Lincoln to Roosevelt to Coolidge to Eisenhower to Nixon to Reagan to Bush -- the GOP has changed much over the years. And it's gonna be changing now again, thankfully... I hope!
