>>I have no problem with Palin buying expensive clothes. If it was her own money.<<
Just to clarify, Palin in an interview last week stated, she did not buy the clothes, The RNC "loaned" them to her.
The fact that this is a topic is ridiculous.
How about something more constructive:
What is the current tax break for middle class under BOs plan?
a) 250,000
b) 200,000
c) 150,000
for extra credit: What will happen in 2 years when the Bush tax cut expires?

The government has a pretty straightforward deal. "We let you take part in our monetary system and our civilization and benefit from our system. In return we get to take whatever slice of the profits we think is fair to keep the system going."
The moment you put your hand on a penny, you agree to the rules. It's like the old press-gang rule: "take the King's shilling, do the King's bidding."
The role of government is neither to take away from the deserving and give to the undeserving or take away from the undeserving and give to the deserving.
The role of government is to make the system work as efficiently as possible. meaning the reduction of disease, poverty, crime and other impediments to the system and reducing the waste of its resources. And sometimes, that means the system is open to abuse.

I'm with those that find the talk about Palin's clothes pretty insignificant. Sure, it might point to a person who speaks the talk but doesn't walk it, but I think there are far more important issues to discuss than where she got her clothes and how much they cost. Really? That's important in the grand scheme of things? In an election year that is busting the bank on all fronts people are focusing on the $150,000 clothing bill?

Jonny Carino's --- Bruce, I really dig the stuffed mushroom appetizer.
I am fortunate in that between Durham and Raleigh I've got the comics section of Books Do Furnish a Room, two Capitol Comics locations, and three of four Ultimate Comics locations!
North Cackalacky --- I wonder where that originated...

John McCain came to my home town of Elyria this afternoon. He is spoke at the community college in the city. It is very rare we have a Presidential candidate come into our city to speak (only JFK and John Kerry have visited in the past). I was going to go to the rally, but I couldn't sneak out of work early. Which stinks because I'm the boss. He still won't get my vote, but I'll give him credit for coming to our city. It is one of the harder hit cities with a high unemployment rate and factory closings. The county as a whole leans Democrat and I do like when a candidate doesn't just ignore an area because it doesn't fit his voting base.

I think the cost is irrelevant (both parties spend ungodly amounts of money during an election for many things)... the gaff is more so about Palin's insistence (illusion?) that she's "just like us" who are mostly living paycheck to paycheck. Its seems pretty hypocritical.
I wonder if it's because it is "lowbrow enough" that the regular person can actually visualize it and put it into perspective.
As for banks busting, companies cashing out and broker firms being bailed, that usually goes way over my head. What doesn't go over is the government giving them billions more to play with. That is definitely more significant.

I not sure where the 41% tax on Exxon comes from when in the second quarter they grossed 138 billion and paid 32 billion in tax, with an 11 billion net profit.
That would make their tax burden of the gross income 23%, for this quarter at least.
I thought movie accounting was funky but the oil companies have their act down.

Scott it's about giving tax breaks to the wealthiest, instead of tax
breaks to the middle class. I bet rich companies like Exxon love the
fact that the McCain/Palin team has the little guy bemoaning Obama's
tax plan.
Tax breaks to companies allow companies to expand and hire. As I've pointed out many, many times, companies don't actually pay taxes. The little guy pays all the corporate taxes through the price of the goods and services those companies provide.
If I had to give tax breaks to anyone, it would be companies. I have no problem with no additional tax breaks for anyone since our government spends more than it gets already.
