Well... tell you guys what.  I still think Obama took a pretty critical hit by not responding swiftly with the facts that clearly back him against that Joe the Plummer campaign.  As I predicted, it's become the centerpiece for the final push of the GOP.

Having said that... I may've been hasty in predicting that it'll cause Obama to lose.

Here's why:

Obama knows how to win elections... let's be clear here - when I say that, I mean that he understands how these things work and what it takes to win them.

See how he disqualified his opponents to win his first seat in Ill.  See how he worked the slow and steady delegate count against Hillary.  She focused on the wrong thing, and lost that contest.  Now look at the polling numbers for he and McCain... ((Let me make THIS clear - I know polls mean nothing, but for the sake of arguement, we'll use them to illustrate this point)) - McCain's poll numbers are slowly climbing - he's gone from a double digit lead to only being ahead of McCain by a few points now...

But look at the poll numbers for Electoral Votes.  He remains, as he's been through most of the race, WAY ahead.

Just as he defeated Hillary, he will defeat McCain.  (And no, wise guys, I'm not suggesting cheating or fraud)   He knows what it takes to win - in this case, the electoral college.  Sure, McCain is closing in on literal polling numbers, but as we've noted in this thread and others, that means something between jack and shit in the reality of American Democracy.

I don't say this in any sort of position of comfort - I think that it's still important that we fight to the end and stay vigilant against Republican Voter Fraud and the attempts to keep legitimate voters from exercizing their right to elect their electoral collage voters, but I do now feel that, in the end, America will be the winner, and Barack Obama will be our next President.

>>I wonder how many girls dressed up like Palin tonight?<<

Girls?! I lay odds it's an even split between girls and boys.

---

I'm off to the West Hollywood Carnaval, so I'm betting I'll see more boys as Palin than girls.

Mike,

I am with you on that, but, hell, I am scared that Obama could loose. And the sad thing is, if he were a tall blue eyed white man with blonde hair, he would be way ahead of McCain. I only say that because a conversation I had with one of my co-workers today. In southern Brazil there is a beautifull city called Florianopolis, mainly colonized by Germans and Italians, so this friend of mine said how he was shocked when he saw a little girl with blond hair and blue eyes begging for money... and his first automatic thought was, wait a minute this do not look right, a beautifull blond little girl dressed like that, dirty, starving and asking for money. Then he realised how racist this thought was, becuase if it were a black kid the impact would not be the same. He was so amazed by that and ashamed at the same time. And then he said, this is when we realise that we end up being racists even when we don't pay attention, it start before we notice. And, of course we spoke about Obama and how things would be a lot easier for him. Anyone who date say that this is not true is either a crazy person or a hypocrite.

Mike O'Brien, I agree with you about the Joe the Plumber, but I think it just illustrates Obama's strengths in how he stays on track and stays above all of it, strategic response.

It's really like Bush's anti-Social Security, the GOP thinks it's gonna fly but it doesn't. I have to laugh ...

You get a shot of Elizabeth Banks with some ice cream on her and I promise I'll sit up and pay attention.

Was something like this what you had in mind, Al?

But that isn't enough. He's got to have a fake Texas twang.

It's definitely a step in the right direction, Todd.

****

I disagree.  if he had been a tall blue eyed white man with blonde hair -- and a typically "American" name to match -- he wouldn't be where he is now.  An anonymous white Senator with a paper thin resume and no substantive credentials, such as Obama brought to the table, would never have captured the media attention the way Obama did.  His name and skin color, the only things really different about the guy, meshed perfectly with his bland and vague rhetoric about change.

That's only part of it, Thom. Obama has had to deal with huge minuses with potential voters because of his mixed, non-Western background.

And let's not even get into paper dolls like GWB and Sarah Palin.

"From the John McCain camp, spokesman Tucker Bounds said: "We hope the strip proves to be as predictive as it is consistently lame."

Ok, this one cracked me up. Either he's saying he hopes McCain'll LOSE but that the strip is consistently lame, or he's saying that he hopes it wil NOT be predictive since it is NOT consistently lame.

I think he was trying to be funny and clever and say he hoped it would prove to be as wrong as it's unfunny, but he should have stayed away from those polysyllabic words, they can mess you up.

Mr. Bounds is probably just tired from the non-stop campaigning. And it doesn't help that his boss is going to lose.
